I once read a post on another site by somebody that was having problems with bots solving their CAPTCHA. They left the CAPTCHA image on the page, but told the user what to enter in the CAPTCHA box in the registration instructions... all of the bots disappeared.
Thats a cool idea!

There are currently almost 40,000 users. This thread started almost three weeks ago. That's 5000 users more. Either TIGS is seeing some ridiculous growth, or some ridiculous spam.

See, that's why I've been coming back to this thread and whining for someone to do something. Ignoring the spammers, TIGS is not a giant place. We're not a gigantic forum who needs time to do things, it should not take a long time to add one line of code to the site, and it's really, really frustrating to see nothing being done. Looking at the profile of the last bots that joined they don't have any signatures in there so it looks like mister Yu has solved that issue. tristan49williamdrew68pettyalexis54gutierreearle9weekskantotisimonow05They do all use hotmail or yahoo email addresses, maybe banning new members from using those email domains would stop the bots?

If we did blacklist Hotmail and Yahoo, wouldn't it just inconvenience legitimate new users and slightly delay the bots before they are directed differently? Surely there's someone on the spammers' side checking to make sure the bots are still getting in?

72 members created yesterday. Only 4 have posted at least once....
Banning certain email domains isn't a good idea like Paint said. Something needs to be done about the 50+ new members a day.

Almost at 40,000 members. Time to celebrate! Once mister Yu deletes all of the zero posters we'll be back celebrating the 400th member!

I feel like there's rats running through my rented apartment. Fifty new rats per day. Their one purpose is to put links in their sigs to help the spammers who hired them.
Your dwarves walk outside and are crushed by the expanding horde of elephants.
An engraving of a bot and a forum user. The bot is laughing. The forums user is crying.

They often come back later and add a signature. Some post an innocuous message or two then add the spam links via their sig later. They are a devious bunch. In another forum I frequent (Ogre3d) they were having issues with actual human spammers registering and making a few on topic, but meaningless posts (usually in the "offtopic" section, since they obviously didn't know enough to blend in in the more technical sections) and later editing or using sigs etc. So the mods wound up having to ban anyone whose first post was offtopic or a "I have the same problem", etc... They stickied a warning to new users: http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=58947
