try cel-shading some time if you haven't - smooth shading can make things look flat if you're not careful - if you shade with one light color and one shadow color you'll get an even better feel for rendering form, I think

cell shading is cool, you focus on the form and all the shade edges, if you think it's a good exercise I'll practice with that
