I agree with most of that, except time travel mechanic allowing for more level exploration
No, no, no. Sonic CD was awful, the time travel thing was clunky and didn't add anything other than showing off how much stuff they could fit on a CD.

I thought Sonic CD was fantastic.
Though the execution of the time travel was a little annoying.
As for Chao, ehhh... It's more or less the way they were put into the games. Not their aesthetic.
Something like the chao garden just seems like it belongs in an RPG more. But maybe that's just me.

I think that the idea was solid, but I have to agree that they could have taken it a LOT further. They could have gone much more exploration based but made it so things you did in the past had real effects on the present and future. It could be something where you revisit a level you had previously beaten to change something in the Past that makes a different level appear in the Present.

I never played a game with a Chao garden, but I see the point of optional collectibles to add replay value. Note, I said OPTIONAL, as in not like the medals in the most recent game which you can, in fact, have too few of to finish the game :D. That's just pathetic game lengthening. Optional collection, on the other hand, would give people more reason to look around the levels once they've beaten the game; if you didn't then you wouldn't miss anything important. You know, like how you could beat Chrono Trigger and be done with it, but could also stick around to find all the what-if endings for fun. I approve of this as long as it isn't intrusive.
Also, rail grinding may not be from the original games, but the handheld games show it can work fairly well in 2d (better, in fact, than in 3d, where it was painful). It's not a bad thing that deserves scorn, although it may be unnecessary. In moderation it's fine, I quite enjoyed the rail parts in the DS game.

It was tolerable! Hardly an experience ruining thing for me.
Also, I love that ending animation. Though I do prefer the Japanese soundtrack, even if it's a little cheesy. Nothing wrong with Sonic Boom either though.

See, it's sort of proof that Time Travel and Casinos are the hallmarks of awesome games. Naturally, it's hard to pull off a good time travel story well, but if you can do it, it increases the awesome factor by about 100.

or Sega could make an original game instead of digging up old franchises and ruining them. on that note, the gunstar game for the GBA was crap.

That is because it wasn't developed by Treasure, as the original game was. They got the enemy spawns all wrong, from the few minutes I played before putting it down.

I'm pretty sure Gunstar Super Heroes was developed by Treasure seeing as how it says "created by Treasure" as the game is booting up.
I wasn't really that hot on it either the first time I played it. It's a very condensed experience, condensed to the point where I wouldn't agree with a few of the design choices. It ends up being more of an Alien Soldier sequel without all the inventory management. This is when I realized that it's the Gunstar HeroesxAlien Soldier game that I've secretly wanted so now I'm quite fond towards it though I can understand how others might not share the same point of view.

The Conduit looks pretty interesting. Bayonetta and that one space RPG that Platinum is working on look good, too.

Seems like more and more footage and concept art for the canceled Saturn sonic game is cropping up.
And I have to say, it looked pretty cool and nobody has really tried anything similar since.

I'm surprised no one at Sega has decided to just finish the game and release it somewhere. It seems like it doesn't have a lot of the problems people are always complaining about (It's basically 2d platforming, just has Sonic, etc). They could make a huge publicity thing out of it too: going back to roots literally, rather than figuratively.
And I like the fisheye, myself.

yes, but it was published by sega seeing as how it says "presented by SEGA" as the game is booting up. (I take this back if it sounds malicous) The Conduit looks pretty interesting.
*edit* Hideous: I will reluctantly admit that madworld looks interesting, but only because of the screen where the character is riding down the side of a building on a motorcycle. Sega has something to do with The Conduit?? !? !?? Whaaaa?!??! Sega just gained +500 XP for that one.
