So I'm a programmer trying to get better at pixel art, and I figured what better way to get practice than de-making X-Com sprites! I'm kinda ripping off Tiny Tower too. Lemme know what you think...and especially if you have suggestions on improving my skillz.

Contrast on those shades are too low. You don't need to use that many either. I see like 4(?) shades per color.

"Guile's" head is kinda off-center - maybe make his body a bit thinner? Also, yeah, I would go with less shades and just go for more contrast. Structurally, though, it's solid pixel-art. Nice.

Yeah very good! reminds me of some of my first pixel art actually. Just make those shades a bit darker and when you get better maybe you could have Guile fight Ken or Ryu in a bloody fight to the death draw down some things your into and try and make them into a pixelated version it can drive you round the bend http://www.derekyu.com/?page_id=225 also try that link for an awesome tutorial if you haven't already but overall very nice

Cool, I'l rework it for less shades and higher contrast. I went through Derek's tutorial (see my avatar icon), but I think that level of pixel art may be too much for me. For now, I'd rather focus on the simpler Tiny Tower-style. Are there any good tutorials on that? Btw, it's not Guile, but rather the X-Com soldier. But yeah, he definitely has the same hair cut

Cheers! The off-center head is meant to make him look like he's looking left a bit. I basically copied Tiny Tower, although my bodies are symmetric. Thanks for the advice - I'll try less shades and more contrast.

use shading to indicate volume; all i see atm is a gradient from light to dark, from left to right
i'd also pick some less garish colors

The hard thing is animating. Animating something like this >> << would take hours, maybe even days of work.

if it takes an individual several days to animate something like that, i'd recommend they find another line of work

It's called nitpicking over little details. some people are perfectionists and it's very easy to strive for perfection on that small of a scale.

after a certain point skill stops meaning what you "can" do but rather how long it takes you to do it.

hmmm idk about that
i just don't think that it should take someone "days" to animate a 16x16 smiley (half of which is made up of repeated frames anyway)
