Watched the kick starter trailer I have to say that it has to be one of the most interesting ones i have seen yet defiantly did its job of getting my attention for the game.

Yeah the game doesn't really look 90s, but I like it that way, it has a pretty unique feel to it.

It reminds me of Quake and Quake II a lot, specially the way the renderer works. And the former was released in 1997, in my opinion they nailed the look and modernized it a bit.

yeah but quake textures look like shit. theres no reason to have shitty looking textures for the sake of being authentic becauseeee it looks bad.

http://www.strafe1996.com/news.html Besides, I don't know, Quake II had this gritty, dirty feel in the textures that I rather liked. But as I said, I like Strafe the way it is, clean pixelart and all

not you. im talkin to other people. i get where youre coming from.
n e way. putting out a game now with muddy ass 1996 textures and goofy polygon shapes and see how it does. its just ignorant to even bring up the fact that the game doesnt look exactly like a game from 96 like... no shit. there have been massive improvements since then. ignoring those improvements would be absurd. they arent building a game in 2015 with an engine and limitations from 19 years ago.
you also need to take into consideration that there were lots of games in the 90s. they all didnt look like quake, so suggesting that it doesnt feel 90s because it doesnt match YOUR personal mental image of the 90s based on one franchise is also dumb.
it aint a simulation its an imitation
i should be a rapper

What are you people talking about? Strafe looks nothing like Quake or Doom. The only similarity is low poly and gameplay. (although i haven't actually seen any gameplay yet, though it probably plays more like modern shooters) The graphics and art style look very modern pixel indie style as oppose to a cool art style. But the actual enemies look nice.

When they market it as if it was 1996, the comparison is inevitable

I love how this game looks. I've been a PC gamer since 90 and watched many FPS games and companies that made them give up quality of gameplay over quality of graphics. Some games do realistic modern graphics true justice (and the graphics actually add to the quality of gameplay). However many have just gotten to the point of absurdity. Old worn out tires on a makeshift buggy should look like old worn out tires.. not be shiny as if covered in lacquer and reflect the world lighting.
I'm definitely backing Strafe. It does remind me of simpler times. I miss the old Doom and Quake days. Those were the days when an entire mod was able to fit on a floppy. Great levels were also designed back then. Much more difficult to do that now (although some games are trying to make modding more user friendly).
And, speaking of modding and I'm going to mention multiplayer as well, @Gluntronics, you guys should keep them in mind. When Strafe comes out, I have a feeling that players will still want to mod or build their own levels. I can also envision kickass rounds of multiplayer deathmatch in Strafe.

Thanks Snow, I agree 100% and we would love nothing more than user modability but we are a core team of 3. If we blow out our goal on KS I would be interested in hiring someone solely focused on making modability easy for the end user but it's not something we can commit to. Same with Multi although we don't want to enter arenafps deathmatch stuff. That would be a fulltime job on its own and I don't think my soul could take the constant messages and complaints that we are getting it all wrong. I like the idea of more co-op / horde mode game modes.

Excellent. Very glad you're open to modability. As for multiplayer, at least having LAN ability should be ok. I know very little about networking, but it is possible with external software to make lan games online capable. If modability becomes an option, making it possible to use external networking software might be an ok idea? (I really don't know) The point is, then you could focus on the game itself without having to worry much about how to deal with griefers or hackers.. I'm guessing anyway. I remember playing King Arthurs Gold when it was just a newborn and dealing with how to prevent griefing and hacking was probably the most painful part for the devs of that game as they were developing it. Since you mentioned co-op and horde modes, you probably have something in mind anyway. Good luck and good work so far. -Snow

when i watched the trailer i was blown away, it reminded me of the vhs tapes of late night shows i would watch, mainly to see sneak peaks of cool videogames way past my bedtime. I hid these tapes in my sock drawer until my mom found them. Of course, she assumed the worst and that they were porn. I couldn't get her to believe me that I was actually just a passionate gamer looking to check out the new games, but her iron fist ways of ruling the house didn't allow me to stay up late enough to watch them. This was one of my first experiences being opressed as a male gamer. I knew that in the future we would revolt and bring back violent videogames together. I love strafe, I love the retro 8-bit pixel art and the gorey zombie killing procedural action. Thank you!! for standing up for what is right, and showing that male gamers DO exist!

Thanks, we're just trying to have fun and not take everything TOO seriously. Like that Clint Eastwood quote “Take your work seriously, but don't take yourself seriously”
