Because bosses kick ass. Giygas from Earthbound (SNES) Graham from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA) ... I think? Legion from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS) Sigma from Megaman X (SNES) ... AAAARRRRRG DIFFICULT!!! Mother Brain from Super Metroid (SNES) Kefka + Gods/Goddesses from Final Fantasy VI (SNES) Zeon from Shining Force II (GENESIS) Dark Dragon from Shining Force (GENESIS) Mana Beast from Secret of Mana (SNES) Lavos from Chrono Trigger Exdeath (lamest name ever) from Final Fantasy V (SNES) Dark Gaia from Illusion of Gaia (SNES) Dark Gaia from Terranigma (SNES) The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) Alien Head Ship from Metal Slug 3 Ballos from Cave Story ...I could go on forever. I'm seriously lacking in some later-gen bosses and early-gen bosses, though. Post the best-of-the-best, and discuss what makes a boss so damn awesome.

I don't recognise a single one of these bosses.
On the topic of what makes a boss awesome, I would say scale. The awe at being confronted with something massive, in both size and power, is what makes fights memorable when you finally finish them.

Probably should be (spoiler heave) instead of image heavy xD Also, every boss is awesome, duh. Mostly the last ones, though. Like this guy Or every single of his: Not all of the new ones, though. Go classic Sonic. And there are probably a TON of bosses I love to do again and again, but kinda forgot which.

I recognize most of them but please, names of bosses + titles of games would help so much to discover them

Well, I see Secret of Mana, Super Metroid, *MASSIVE SPOILER*, and Castlevania in there. I can vouch for the awesome-ness of Legion, it's always been my favorite Castlevania boss. In one game Legion shows up twice! Once as standard legion, and then again as an undead flying sphere of horror! Seriously, you guys can't recognize Super Metroid? Or do you just not finish games? My favorites (EDIT: Names? Sure!): Phantasy Star 4, Profound Darkness: La Mulana, Mother: If you don't get this one, don't ask. It's from Silhouette Mirage. Oh, and I can't forget Ridley:

All of Okamis bosses, seriously. I don't know their names though. Man Okami pictures are few on the internet.

Yeah, I wanna know who these bosses are too. Some of my own: I wanted to get a picture of the red dragon, he was my favourite in Baldur's Gate 2. But all the dragons were awesome. Lechku and Nechku, from Okami. I don't want to spoil their secret, but believe me it blew my mind when I first played it. Also Andy, the one you posted is called Orochi Saavedro, from Myst III. Does he count as a boss? Zowie, from Gitaroo Man!

Hell yes, dude! Personally, though, I would have picked Thanatos ahead of the Mana Beast. In Shining Force, I particularly enjoyed fighting the witch Mishaela and General Elliot. Their battles were just really fun and (relatively) challenging. I also really enjoyed most of the bosses from Zelda: Wind Waker, though my favorite would have to be the Helamroc King.

I love Shadow of the Collosus, but my favorite boss is: It's just so awesome to fight . Of course, most of the bosses were brilliant in that game, in my opinion. The last one is incredibly epic too but I'd not like to spoil it for anyone.

Does anyone remember the giant insect boss you fight in the swamp in the NES game Crystalis? I remember that battle being pretty sweet.

Yoshi's Island is the best platforming game of all time, for sure. The bosses did rule. Probably should be (spoiler heave) instead of image heavy xD Good point. Done. Anyhow, I'll add names+games by mine in a sec here. I just thought of a bunch off the top of my head. Okami and Phantasy Star 4 actually came to mind, but I was tired of googling images. :D Man that was awesome.

And for those of you who aren't familiar with The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day, you must watch this video:
