If I'm trying to learn something, solve a problem, or come up with ideas, I generally can't have any music or background chatter going on, I'm distracted terribly easily. But if I'm doing something I know how to do and doesn't require huge creative effort then I tend to have music on in the background. Anything more visual or narrative based would just drag my attention away.

Life gets easier at night time, for some reason. Productivity increases.
For me, this is because everyone else is dead asleep, and I have the whole dorm to myself. It's completely quiet, and I don't have to deal with other people. Sure, I guess that's somewhat antisocial behavior, but hey- it helps when you need to get shit done.
Same with me - for me, it's partially due to the fact that at nighttime I realize how screwed I am due to procrastination, but I tend to be more productive even when it's not homework-related.

It's not antisocial if there's no one to socialise with!

I try to sing in tune to game music while I work(on non-music things) -- don't judge me, bro!

I also need to be constantly drinking some sort of latte.

I can only have a distraction going if the work I'm doing is something tedious, like animating. During one animation project, back when I had my second monitor working, I watched all 5 seasons of Daria while rotoscoping. These days I listen to Radiolab, TIGRadio, the IndieGames.com podcast, and the Infinite Ammo podcast. I've exhausted almost all of them and I'm looking for something new; might have to finally get into Fresh Air or This American Life, but it's daunting having years and years of content to sift through.

If I'm making something like character art or backgrounds, I can't listen to anything with words. I dunno, I need my language centers completely focused on what I'm doing. But sometimes I can handle listening to instrumentals; for that, I like Headphone Science.

Ever since I started work on Gratuitous Space Battles, I've been listening to a big long playlist of sci-fi music from Star Wars, Star Trek etc. Sometimes I even have Revenge Of The Sith movie playing in one monitor whilst working in the other.
The idea is that the whole atmosphere and 'attitude' and emotion of the stuff gets so infused into my brain, it works itself into the design, the code and the text and everything when I'm working.
I now hear darth vaders theme tune ALL THE TIME.

Sometimes I listed to music while I work or turn on the tv, but other times I am just as likely to focus on just coding.

1) Drink cup of tea
2) Listen to music (If working then 90% of the time it will be anamanaguchi)
3) Pace room while thinking about how I'm going to do the next thing.
4) Repeat

1/3 scotch
2/3 water

Chrono Trigger/Cross + FF6 + Various Reorchestrated Ultima Soundtracks.

Ahhh...
That helps me get into a nostalgic fantasy mode, and then I can really work on my nostalgic fantasy game.
