I still think the forced farming is shitty. I just think the new cap won't effect my playing all that much either now, since I've gotten better. I'm not necessarily agreeing that it was never a problem. @FK in the Coffee: I agree. I already hold DeS/Dsk1 in as high regard as my childhood classics. I can't think of two games that have had a more profound effect on games in recent years. But this is a Souls thread, so some bias is at play here...

I want to do a gun/itens only run. Somebody know if it's fun to play or just boring? I think I was too critical of bloodborne in this thread, lol. My bad. I've been playing the game since the release so I definitely love it.

Yeah I don't mind the cap. I'd even be willing to see it lowered to 10 if they just removed them as a farmable item altogether. Long live Estus.

so I just bought DS1 on steam. Going to try and play it here in a bit when it finishes downloading. Hopefully I can get on the souls bandwagon What do people here think about DK1? better or worse than the other ones?

i kinda like how the souls games are simultaneously (em)power(ment) fantasies and weakness fantasies, how they manage to be both about experimentation & freedom and about submission & discipline. i don't know why it works, but it does. just some musing as a vague semi response to maw's article link.

I feel like Bloodborne's difficulty enhances its atmosphere in an incredible way tbh
I've played plenty of “horror” games that don't feel horrifying at all because the game makes you so OP, but even wielding monstrous trick weapons which are frightening in their own right still puts you leagues below most of the game's enemies. The looming risk of lost progress adds so much tension and terror to the already nightmarish world.

I don't think the difficulty contradicts the empowerment narrative. The difficult is there to make you feel even more powerful when you actually defeat a boss or a strong enemy. The game is not only about dying all the time, it's about dying all the time and then winning, which makes the victory more meaningful and satisfaying. (you got that revenge feeling when you finally kill smough and ornstein, take that bosses!)
BUT, I find interesting how the story of the souls games is not one of empowerment. In bloodborne, the line between man and beast is blurred, you're told that the beasts are people and that hunters are the worst kind of beasts. The whole hunt is a mechanism of the church to cover up their own excess in the use of blood and the final step of empowerment, the ascension to godhood, turns you into a pathetic slime. The ending of the souls series tend to be anticlimatic because they frustrate your expectation of empowerment and of closure. In this way, they remind me of Shadow of the Colossus, where plot and gameplay collides and you have a interesting paradox.
