Oh I know I have to obey them all.

The color one I was merely saying I liked it as an idea.

The rhyme one I was saying I would follow because it appears that it's not going to make the main list so I just wanted to say that I would probably follow it anyway. Smiley

this sounds fun.  I'll probably be in during the game making part with a short 1 or 2 day project.  That said.

You must use a preset pallete from colourlovers.com?...
This or something else with color sounds fun

and I'll probably try this also...

You don't pick and choose. YOU OBEY ALL OF THEM.
Because that's what rules are.
Tho' there's a rule that allows you to not obey 1 rule Wizard

Okay people, start spreading the word about this a little faster, we need to get some more rules in before October rolls around.

Post links to this thread on other game dev websites, spread the word. Get people interested. I can only do so much here.

I got the TIGForums and the GMG covered, we need more interest.
WizardHand Thumbs Up Right

Also, the rules have been updated again.

I'm gong to be honest some of the rules are a bit retarded (the noun rule for example)

This is a really good idea for a competition, and it actually seems to be generating a pretty nice set of rules.

How about Survival must not be the primary game mechanic, so we something more interesting than a bunch of "try to do x without dying" games.

I agree that the noun rule is a little silly, it's a rather limited list of nouns.

I don't think the list is limiting at all.
Really what couldn't you manage to fit on the list?

Creature, Person, and Plant cover most everything that would be in a game anyway.

Even more abstracts like Spaceship could be argued to be a ship.

I think anyone who feels limited by that list instead of inspired has some serious creativity issues. The list is very specifically meant to keep the facing front of the game, very simple.

Much like Scribblenauts, in the sense that the word you type might not give the result you're expecting, but there's enough variance within the simple words that are available to get the job done.

Plus if you don't like it, ignore it.

That's what I mean this "rule" is not necessary, it's just a long list of everyday words.

If that's true then proceed without acknowledging it, like I said.
You probably shouldn't have any trouble.

The list could be of help to some and just a common glance over for others.
Think of it as less a rule and more of a pathway.

The sound/music must be conform the 2nd rule of dogme 95: "The sound must never be produced apart from the images or vice versa. Music must not be used unless it occurs within the scene being filmed*, i.e., diegetic."

*"being filmed" should be translated to "of the game".

Only diogetic sound sounds (ha) like a great idea! Grin
There will probably be at least one game with a guy carrying around a boombox, and it would be even more awesome if that was the central mechanic.

Wait, what? Eep! I better get something going!
Edit: Wait, you lie! It's not October 1st according to the forum clock, and a forum competition should go by the forum clock, no?

So, for our game, should we just make a thread like "[YMTR] Game Title"?

I was originally thinking the whole game, but I think it should be changed to include about five palletes from that website for the whole game. Just use placeholder sprites until we get word from Tokyoma.

I have some family business to take care of today. I won't be able to get the official thread up until later. The [YMTR] tag is just fine and I was thinking one pallet for the whole game, but I may change it to two or three. Until the official thread gets up just assume all current rules are final. I made a few small changes to the list, good luck you guys.

Does giving the player instructions count as breaking the fourth wall? Because telling the player to press X or something is addressing them. I suppose it only counts as breaking the fourth wall if it's said by an ingame character, so it's safe to have an omnipresent and invisible narrator completely external from the game. All objects can either interact with the player or with the game, and only the player can bridge the gap between these two with controlling a character?
