I can't think of a reason anyone would think this was a good idea beyond like, absolute filthy xenophobia
You think there's no inherent value in sovereignty at all - a value that perhaps cannot be measured in money? It's all about the economy for you guys?
[/quote]

if you think bolstering the same nationalistic sentiments that got us into two world wars in a row in the first half of the 20th century is a good value, then sure.

by "us" i mean central europe, just to be clear

the real question is: now that the UK is out of EU, who is their government going to blame for shitty policies?

also, people in my country are extremely hostile to the EU, so im scared of the UK setting a precedent and a similar referendum happening here.

im not talking about the press so much as im talking about the habit of EU politicians to agitate in their own country against decisions they themselves (or their deputies) helped push in the EU parliament.

Their probably put the blame on the opposition party interfering or something :/

Watching the UK economy implode in the most dramatic of ways is probably going to change their mind a little

not so sure about that. most of the anti-EU sentiment is not rooted in anything rational*. it's the result of both nationalism/xenophobia and the aformentioned tendency of governments to use the european parliament as a dumping ground for unpopular decisions and blaming "the EU bureaucracy" (which they themselves are part of).

*not that there aren't plenty of rational reasons to be against the EU, mind.

getting the working classes to fuck themselves over under false pretenses has been a kind of international sport for the past couple decades (see reagan's "trickle down" economics for example)

So, can someone explain clearly what the motive was behind this decision? I don't get why this was a thing at all. Seems like people voted to shoot themselves and their children in the foot for an imaginary title of "Independant".

Also what the fuck

How exactly does being an independent country from the EU help them not have to take in immigrants or whatever? Or is it even bigger racism than that and they just don't want anyone coming into their country?

"They" being the people in charge of course.

In a nutshell:

1. It's 2015, David Cameron is running in the UK general election, and he fears losing votes to far-right party UKIP, who are promising a referendum on leaving the EU.
2. David Cameron also promises he will have a referendum in order to secure his position and avoid losing too many votes to UKIP.
3. The European migration crisis happens. The EU handles it poorly.
4. The referendum happens, and voters don't really like the EU anymore, so the referendum that Cameron thought would be an easy win goes to the other team.
5. David Cameron realizes his mistake and resigns. WHOOPS.
