Guys, seriously, 300 was a comic book movie, not a social commentary. I think people who look too deep into 'stuff that was made just for fun' and take it apart and say it's not deep enough and reject it are asshats.
Mr. Cake isn't saying it's not deep enough exactly; he's saying it's really bizarre. I mean, if it lost the historical context, and were just mindless, none of this analysis would apply ... Anyway, I'm not sure why "comic book movie" and "social commentary" are mutually exclusive to you, especially considering recent comic book movies include, er, V for Vendetta. Also, Akhel, that's not awesome

Sorry, I know the topic has moved past this, and I don't actually want to argue with anyone, but I just gotta point something out: To put things in historical context. Imagine a movie where the noble Hitler led a group of Nazi soldiers against overwhelming odds against the evil Russians, accompanied by nearly constant speeches by Hitler about how important it is to practice racial tolerance. There's a flaw here. NAZI Germany was invading Russia. The Persian Empire was invading Greece. From Wikipedia: In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_ThermopylaeKey word being invading. Your analogy would hold up if the story were from the viewpoint of Soviet Russia - social blemishes and all. Agree with Socialism or not, the way Soviet Russia treated their own citizens as cannon fodder makes them unlikable enough in my books. That aside, I hold the Russian soldiers of WWII as heroes who died fighting for their way of life. 300 is a film about soldiers fighting foreign invaders; it isn't historically accurate, we all agree on that. Messed up as Sparta may have been, the warriors who fought at Thermopylae didn't die for just Sparta. They died for Greece as a whole and for the continued safety of their way of life. Now, how that applies to modern day events is an entirely different can of worms that I'm not going anywhere near. P.S. Sorry to go off-topic everyone. Umm...here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=-xEzGIuY7kw

My analogy was only in so far as it is a bizarre recasting of a historical incident.
That is very true but not remotely relevant to what I was talking about.
The Spartans died at Thermopylae so they could keep slaves instead of being slaves. I'm not commenting on whether the war was justified, so much as that the depiction of Spartan culture is wildly inaccurate.

My mistake. I wasn't so much trying to justify anything as point out what seemed like an odd analogy to me. I've said what I had to say though, so let's carry on with the awesome.

Awesome. Whilst this is naturally awesome, I'm a little put off by the fact that this looks to be a rather poor colouring effort on a piece of line art done by an artist that I can't find a link to at this moment. If I do come across it (I'm sure I had it bookmarked... somewhere!) I'll link it, as just using the plain lineart as your desktop will look far better than that ^^; (I know I had it as mine for a couple months!)

...Sparta etc. ... You've got to admit, it was worth it for the Ephors - when did they become inbred priests again? :D

I think that happened around the same time as Ephialtes became Spartan instead of Malian and also a mutant for some reason.
