Mashem Up is a mod that a fellow colleague and I have been working on for the past month while using the Portal 2 authoring tools. Taking advantage of Portal 2’s coop features we have effectively created our own multiplayer versus game that uses none of Portal 2’s main game mechanics. That’s right! No portals. No paint. The only mechanics we utilized are mashers, faith plates and turrets.
Mashem Up is an Assault Defense game that requires players to face off against one another in an obscured mountainous region out in the middle of nowhere. Players start in their own base and are each given three cubes which they must score into the opposing player’s goal. Once a player scores with all three cubes, they win the game! So what makes this game fun? Why all the craziness that goes on while attempting to assault the other player’s base.
Players are given a variety of ways to defend themselves. This includes remotely activated faith plates which send players to their deaths, along with turrets that can be placed around the perimeter or your base or the opposing player’s base. As the player’s last line of defense, they are given a grid of mashers which can be set up to go off automatically or manually (via the multiplayer pinging tool). If a player gets hit by the masher, then it’s back to the start.
Although slightly confusing at first, due to the current lack of a tutorial, we have found that once people have so far thoroughly enjoyed what we’ve created upon understanding what they are supposed to do. Numerous strategies have emerged, all of which have only added to the fun and craziness that is Mashem Up. Although we have yet to make a package of the mod, we do have a few screen shots. We plan to post a video soon. Feel free to comment!
