I was thinking about participating in the 2012 Global Jam, what are peoples thoughts and experiences on the event?

It was a lot more fun than I imagined it would be (probably why I missed it the first year I intended to go). Combine extreme creativity and fun people and sleep deprivation and you get a wonderful hobby/career-affirming event. Do it!

I decided to sign-up for the first time. There is some good FAQ info on the wiki: http://globalgamejam.org/wiki/ggj-wiki

It's a lot of fun. I usually work from home after going the first day (I have no laptop). This year I'm going to try to work from my iPhone. I convinced a friend to do it last year and now he has investors for an iPhone game. He had no prior game dev experience.

Umm, apologies for the dumb question, but where would that GGJ exactly be?
There's one in Berlin in a month that I'm intending to visit, but I can hardly imagine that would be the one... or is it?

It's not Highlander, so 'there can be only one' doesn't really apply here hah. It's a jam that happens simultaneously around the world, thus the name 'Global Game Jam'. So the one your going to might be it!

Here's how you can double-check whether the one you're going to is part of the global game jam: http://globalgamejam.org/Locations/country(well, also, is the one you're going to Jan 27-29?)

Yes, that's the date. Looks like I need to read up on this thing I paid admission for.

Well the Berlin thing is asking 20 €, probably to rent the place, WiFi etc. It's literaly a meetup of sorts. Please tell me I haven't been ripped off.

A lot of the locations have to rent out space, or pay for liability insurance, or buy food, or get t-shirts or whatever.

I'll be taking part again, this will be my third time. Every year I always have a blast, and it's great being able to see all the projects come to life (especially the ones that keep going after the event).
Do it. Doitdoitdoit.

So, I, er...
Now how is this going to work? Will I be able to make games with y'all as my bros or is this more or less a local thing, where I'll be servicing the Berlin clientèle with my graphics?

It is sort of local, you look for the closest jamming place and go there. Sure nothing prevents you to go any location you want, I guess.

I'll be doing it in Melbourne.
I did it last year and it was brilliant, even though our game was a spectacular mess, though I guess it all depends on who you spend your time with.
