ok so 12 hour train ride in which i spilled my beer on the poor girl sitting next to me while playing zelda.
then i get to penn station, and figure ill take the metro to brooklyn and save some taxi fare to my friend's place.
of course, the NYC subway system being the indecipherable mindfuck it is, i ended up riding the wrong way for quite some time before realizing it.
also, i dont have a cell phone, or any information beyond my friend's address.
didnt know where to get off.
so i figured id get off at clark, because thats the name of the street i live on, and ive always loved the name clark for its association with william s. burroughs 23 enigma (look it up). as i step out of the station, i realize that the 2 lines stopping at that station are 2 and 3. on a sign by the exit, it read CLARK 2 3.
i get on a cab and give him the address. i tell him to take me to 6th avenue. he asks me what cross street and i say i have no idea, he says ok.
now NYC cabs have these ridiculous little touch TV screens with ads playing all the time built into the back of the front seat. it distracted me. i looked out the window and say the guy was driving me back across brooklyn bridge and into Manhattan again!
dude eventually gets to manhattan and turns around, and was gracious enough to reset the fare (which got him a fatter tip). he finally drops me off at my friends place.
on the way there on the train i realized id forgotten to confirm to my friend that i was indeed on my way today, and that id be in town around 8-9. (a kind of mistake im known for).
but now it was 10:30 and nobody was home.
i stood there, in the middle of nowhere NYC, with my bag and suitcase, freezing my ass off, with nowhere to go. i got on some unlocked wi-fi and tried to get a comon friend of my host to call him and let him know im there. no such luck, his phone is offline.
so i ended up just sitting in my luggage, with my anorak on and my laptop on my knees, trying to get on facebook see if any of my friends where online, atleast try and find some shelter for the night. half an hour in i was starting to try and come up with a plan. telling myself this could be a really enriching experience. i started walking around, seeinf if there wasnt a restaurant or a pub somewhere near i could wait at, but nothing.
that's when i noticed the cross street was 23rd.
and then my friends came back, and i had a beer.
now im here.
