EDIT: so im adding a character sample of what im thinking might be an appropriate style that would be the easiest and fastest for me to work with.

new character concepts

My goal is to include a lot of different archetypical type characters to pad out the plethora of available 'enemies' to do battle against.

WIP bg rendering sample

Who im looking for - experienced programmer looking to team up with capable artist to do a beat-em-up inspired game. Someone who is self motivated, has ample time during any given week and is willing to make the endeavor a priority. Someone who is already pretty familiar with game development, and someone who isnt going to ask me if i can pad a sprite by X or Y amnt of pixels to accommodate having to figure out a little placement. Someone who is usually available to contact frequently throughout the day, and if you are in the US that would really help with time-zone syncing.

Game Concept (rewritten again):
written recently by me. Using some real life events as a starting point for inspiration, a rather obvious concept developed. A random dude whos just a normal guy like you and me, winds up having a really bad freakin day. Ill spare publication of specific details but trust me it was just really bad. So he finds himself later at a bar, finding whatever solace he can from a tap, when one jerk-off pushes this frazzled-but-otherwise-normal-dude one step too far over the edge. Rage. Lots of rage. Epiphany. Theres only one good way to show the world what kindof pissed off dude you are. Time to show them the wrong end of your fists! (epic world-wide brawl/meltdown ensues).

The concept is pretty simple, it focuses on good fun arcade action through some classic brawlin gameplay, with a touch of 'fighter' elements thrown into it to kick the action up a notch. Plots and drama are highly discouraged, and are replaced with comedy and satire throughout!

Without giving too much away, i want to meld some basic combat action of final fight/streets of rage/river city ransom, with some more street fighter like mechanics, evolving abilities including bizarre/funny supermoves, focusing purely on a manic battle experience. The actual flow of the game has a bit of a twist on it that would set it apart from being a clone type game.

Who am I?
What can i bring to the table? - Well aside from a host of strange ideas that ive been wanting to put in game form for a very long time now, im a pretty savvy pixel and 2d artist. im comfortable with higher res raster, vector down to 16x16 sprites. see www.spriteart.com for some examples of my work (or peruse my 'junk2' folder if you wish).

Desired Platform: Im interested to go primarily a PC route with this game, perhaps console if it makes sense to do so. Not interested in doing mobile or any apple specific stuff.

tools/engines (edited): ok so an acquaintance has recently been turning me on to the oh so many possibilities with UNITY (gasp). Im still not a huge fan but its such a prolific tool it would seem nonsensical to ignore it. im still 99% sure that theres no way in hell im going to pay for a unity license though.

-Spriter (animation tool)

(editing out some periphery nonsense that no longer applies)

update: im putting together a sketch up of the environment i want this game to start in. the latest looks something like this

Ill be updating it as it continues to progress. It doesnt appear that random pixel art and a small blurb is going to entice any interest.

I must say your work is A+ art, anyone who is really interested in making something unique and proffesional should seriously work with you. I find it odd that you haven't find one programmer yet. Good luck St0ven!

I still can't believe programmers are not piling up on your front door. I think I said the same thing last time but I would definitely love working with you if I was not already involved in a demanding project. Hopefully this can happen someday, good luck in the mean time!

I would be interested but the "no mobile games" option cuts me out of the equation.

truth is, today the best way to distribute small indie game projects is through app stores.

people want to play mostly "big name" games on consoles and FB games on PC.

I keep looking at this post, and I'm surprised, too.

Personally, I don't have the skills or drive (at the moment) to do it justice.  I've got a lot left to learn about game programming, even though I'm professional non-game programmer.  So I hate the idea of tying someone up while I get my life in order and get some practice prototypes written.

I think the art is fantastic and could make a great game.

I think if this thread tells you something, it's pretty much "Just go on creating the assets, people are already slavering over it, you're pretty much guaranteed to find someone interested in due time". Smiley

as it were, im still looking for a partner on this.

I have some big hopes/plans for this game. I am hoping to find someone ideally who is rather experienced and has a decent amount of time to contribute towards development.

I have a lot of free time to put forward towards this.

some random object rendering for the scene.

please email or PM if you are interested in making this project a reality.

why not open a kickstarter, raise some funding and hire a programmer?

One needs a little something to show to successfully get any serious attention for kickstarter. also it would appear to be quite a bit of effort just to prepare for that type of thing. one needs some base level of branding, a decent amount of onceptualization, and something to reward early abckers with. id need a kickstarter at this point to help create the kickstarter page. haha. Too early for that yet.

btw bjadams:   I no longer have any restrictions for platform (aka mobile) to work with. however, regardless, i still think the controls arent very well suited for mobile Sad

Stoven, I might be interested to help you out, as the Windows store for phones, tablets and desktops is going to launch in a couple of weeks so there is a viable distribution channel there.

Had plans to do a beat em up and an rtype shooting game in the next future anyway.

if you're still without a programmer, contact me privately so I can send you my Resume, so that you can judge if i might be a good fit for your project.

Maybe it's not ideal but Open Beats of Rage could be a good start. The program has come a long way and it allows for commercial projects. I also know a programmer interested in programming a beat em up engine (search EvE: Evolution Engine). he's a bit tied atm but I think this would be right up his alley.

I would love to program this game, ideally using unity3D. I work for myself but my team quit on me to get their fancy paying jobs back. I can work full time and have been working on a side scrolling game for that last 6+ month (2+ months full time).

My name is Edd Norris and I am an experienced game developer. I have worked on 2 Nintendo Wii games as both a gameplay programmer and a lead programmer. I have also worked on 6 Casino games as both a generalist programmer and a lead programmer. I have began and lead development of 3 Indie Dev Projects, 2 of which dissolved due to team member's not meeting commitments and one of which is in active development, though slowed because team members have not been able to make their commitments.
I believe in quality and feasibility. I want to make a product which above all can stand the tests of time and allow for critical review.

Thank you for reading this,

EDD

I was looking for an artist today to collaborate with for exactly this type of game.  I've been a huge fan of beat-em ups my whole life.

I'd love to work together.  I am a professional animator by trade, and have been using Unity3D and construct 2 for sometime now. Both would work well for your idea.  I can throw together a quick prototype using your existing artwork if you'd like to try some things out.

I have plenty of time to commit to working on the project and can also help out with animation of course along with the programming side of things.
