I love video game soundtracks. I listen to them all the time while working on art and programming. Here's the playlist of music I currently have if ya'll want to use it when you're working: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLs2KjYUEqkvsy9TzYGtCHS2T6C1W0KWRSGotta say, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse soundtrack; REALLY AWESOME. I also got a few mixed compilations by various youtubers (Should take a peak at the SNES ones made by Spybionic, good presentation along with the music). Also, top 100 N64 songs is pretty good, those guys also made a top 50 Megaman Classic songs list. discuss game soundtracks, your favorite ones, what tracks ya listen to when working, ya know the drill.

Quite often it's Railroad Tycoon II because that guitar play is just sweet, C&C series for some headbanging, Dune & Transport Tycoon when I'm in a mood for some Adlib and Doom, because Doom. Fez, too.

PPPPPP/MMMMMM La Mulana Shovel Knight Street Fighter King of Fighters Guilty Gear Izuka Super Smash Bros. Mega Man Sonic the Hedgehog
...seriously, don't get me started. I'll be here for days.
On a related note, I love how now a single YouTube can contain a complete score in one video. It's amazing for dev-zoning!! :D

Anybody have good examples of game soundtracks that are more focused on ambience and atmosphere, less on catchy or even discernible melodies?

Nobody mentioned Bastion and Hotline Miami? Those are the only ones I really listen to. Soul Reaver 1 and Fallout 1/2 too, but very rarely.

My favorites: Yoko Shimomura - ( , , Mario & Luigi Series, Kingdom Hearts) - Yoko has a very distinct style. Since her work is in many of my favorite JRPGs she really embodies the feeling of console RPGs, to me- her works feel like they're grounded in the fantasy worlds they illustrate but still feel very Yoko. Some of her hallmarks to me are rad violin and piano sections. If you care about violin or piano please listen to thisDave Wise - ( Donkey Kong Country 2, Tropical Freeze) - his works are so emotional and just dripping with atmosphere. His percussion is frequently incredible, too. He also scored the GBA port of DKC3 and was involved with the first Donkey Kong Country game's soundtrack. His work is amazing, I wish he scored more games so there was more to listen to.

Ooh F-Zero :D I'm usually flicking between classical (WoW, Final Fantasy, Shenmue, Catherine etc) and retro (Mario, OCRemixes, Phoenix Wright, Streets of Rage, Zelda etc). The new Super Smash Brothers album is pretty cool too, and Transistor of course! I'm usually listening to either game, movie or anime soundtracks as I can focus on writing/ coding better. Oh, and Katamari. That's just wonderful

Scott Pilgrim by Anamanaguchi: Also, while not video game music, Boards of Canada has some great ambient tunes that gives off that Fez-ish vibe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbhLsoZHw3II thoroughly enjoy these. Oh yeah, also Transistor and Bastion are equally awesome, but that's been said.

Street Fighter 2's music was iconic in my opinion. I give that a listen every once in a while.

About the only one is Thunder Force IV's. The bass on certain tracks is obscene and this is coming from a game on the Mega Drive, home to some of the most abrasive aural horrors you're ever likely to hear. There are others that I have an appreciation of but listen to those outside of their respective games too rarely to count.

I'll listen to a lot of Nintendo music mainly from their older games. I loved the Banjo and Kazooie and basically anything else Grant Kirkhope creates.
