Ludum Dare is a solo, from scratch competition.

In 48 hours, you build a game entirely on your own based on the given theme. No premade content, and no teams.

Ludum Dare #13 is next weekend. It's a 48 hour 'make a game from scratch' competition, which some Tiggers have entered before.  You have to work solo, and do all the code, art, sound and music. There is no prize for winning either.

I'm hoping to enter! I'll be using Unity for my piece because it's the only language I'm able to use.  Right now I'm just practicing with my toolset to make sure any technology I might use actually works. For example, I did some quick audio-recording tests for vocals and sound effects, and I did some tests of lightmaps in 3D studio MAX in case I want to use those.  My plan is to make a 3D game of some sort, but other than that I'm just waiting on the theme to be announced on Saturday.

Is anyone else planning to enter this?

I was all set to enter this, but after the last few days I'm not sure if I've got the energy, heh. Maybe. Wink

thanks for the reminder about LD, I might have a go, and the above is excellent advice as I learned during the last Pyweek  Roll Eyes.

Forgive my noob-ness, but can anyone enter this compo, from anywhere? (ie: is it in-person or online?)

And how strict is the no premade content rule?  It seems like a hard thing to define... would you be allowed to use things like Allegro or Game Maker?

It's online, anyone can enter.  Game Maker and Allegro are both fine.

Here's the main site:
http://www.ludumdare.com/

Here's a page on what's allowed:
http://www.ludumdare.com/wiki/ld13:libs

It's just for fun, so I think they try to be inclusive Smiley

Yeah, of course. So long as it doesn't implement gameplay code, you're fine!

Guess I'm out, then. Behaviors are a basic thing in Construct.

I would have liked to enter this comp, after having taken part in a "Game in a Day" competition almost a year back, but I am travelling on 5th night. Hmm, what if I turn this around in a day. That would be a tough challenge now, wouldnt it?

I've wanted to enter this the last couple of years, the problem is it falls right in the middle between the last week of class and finals week.

dbest, the contest doesn't really start until the 6th. If you check to find the theme on the night/evening of the 5th you can be ready to make your game the next day. Also, some people do 3-6 hour entries because they are busy, but still want to do something simple and fun. ^_^

TeamQuiggan, the contest is every four months, so you should be able to enter one of the other ones.

It's pretty hard to navigate, but here's how you can look at the previous winners:
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/category/ld12/ - Tower
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/category/ld11/ - Minimalist
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/category/ld10/ - Chain Reaction

If you click on the name of the people in the winners grid, scroll down past the comments, you'll find the final submission of their game.

Otherwise if you check entries tagged with 'final' you can find people's submitted games: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/tag/final/

@dock - totally agree with you. I will be in GMT+5.30 on the 6th, so I think it will effectively start for me on the 7th. Hmm, maybe I better wait for the next one. Hope it comes along soon.

Oh sweet, I'd completely forgotten about Lundum Dare's existance, cheers.  Definately quite tempted to give it a go.

Round two of voting is up! Today is 'Concepts'.
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ld13-voting-round-2-concepts/

Round one was for 'physical objects', in which 'Roads' won.

Round three is for Verbs.

...and on the fourth day people will vote for which of the three they want to work on.
