I've noticed that items in Mario Kart tend to have replaced the much-hated rubberband cpu assistance in earler MK games to some degree. The net result is still the same, (karts that are losing are given help to catch up,) but it's at least given some explanation (ie. the kart in last has caught up because he got the bullet power up vs. the kart in last suddenly becoming 20kph faster for no apparent reason)

thanks Phil! We are both putting our hearts and souls into this project.

the new game mode is going to be called "fallout" ( a nod to super monkey ball here ) were the goal will be to avoid being knocked off the platform. We plan on implementing 3 items to make it a little more interesting and dynamic.

Right now we are thinking of them as all available at once, and you will be in a standard format so that you can easily download new ones that we or anyone else makes, as well as be able to share them with other people in the server as well. That would go for karts, characters, wheels and accessories as well.

We could still have some special ones that are unlock able or are only equip able to players in the top % of rankings or whatnot - but since we want this to be fully open to customization, I think that would not be as much of an appeal if you can just download and trade lots of cool things with no restrictions.

There pretty much needs to be SOME unlockable stuff in games I play. The knowledge that there's more to do is something that usually keeps me going.

I think multiplayer itself takes care of the "more to do" requirement. At least thats the big reason I play multiplayer games almost exclusively.
