Holy crap you're fast.

I imagine this would be an image someone like Fish would pick.

Made a little prototype today.

Not much to show yet, but I'll put up new builds as I go, partly to get feedback and partly to keep motivation up.

EDIT: Space to jump (also shows animation mockup)

will try to finish this today/tomorrow as a really simple rhythm game, as I'll probably be really busy soon.

edit:
added a player character (some public domain sprite)
made simple system for loading and playing music (and adding stuff in sync to the music)
basically made it pretty simple to add content

I think I'll be able to finish this tomorrow.

I'll check your prototype when I get home. Gotta keep the feedback flowing.

I wish I wasn't at school so I could test it. But either way, how easy will it be to make a non-compo version that has a flying unicorn and Erasure's 'Always' playing the background?

That'd be easy enough(unicorn sprites would be only real challenge), how come?  Durr...?

Right now I'm making a new prototype- just need to find some suitable music and make a simple "test" chart  Smiley

Right now I'm just testing placement/timing of hazards. I'm planning to mix it up later - I might do a two button mechanic where you're flipping between walking on top of/under the rainbow while jumping over hazards.

I like the direction you're taking this, though I feel that using gradients doesn't look so good. Maybe you should use a series of colored strips. Also, this reminds me of Bit Trip Runner.

Also, I got this after a while:

noted- I'll try to replace it soon Smiley

also, eep. that would be the hazard chart not ending properly. should fix that.

Sweet game so far! I'm gonna go ahead and splice "Always" into the game since you so kindly kept the MP3 and INI file outside of the executable.

I've played it- forgot about it until now, though  Shrug

This is  looking really good, nice music.

Thanks  Smiley
That's Stroll by Cheap Dinosaurs- I don't think I have permission to use it yet, though.

EDIT: it's licensed under Creative Commons, so I can use it with proper attribution Smiley

That was my goal - to make it easy to add new songs. Don't start working on it yet, though - I'm planning to add a new hazard as well as making a level editor, so the level format will probably be changed soon.

The level format as it should be is going to look like this:
Code:
//the levels are saved with the same name as the song with the ".ini" extension
//so the chart for "stroll.mp3" would be "stroll.mp3.ini"

//a group for all the steps, might add other groups for other features later
[STEPS]
MaxSteps = 30 //the number of steps in the song
Step0 = 500 //place the first step at 500 ticks from the start of the song
Step0Type = OBSTACLE //this step will be an OBSTACLE that you need to jump over
Step1 = 1500
Step1Type = FLIP //this obstacle will be a FLIP, requiring you to switch sides
Step2 = 2665
Step2Type = OBSTACLE

//etc...

EDIT3:

By the way, Melly, I tried replacing the gradient rainbow with colored strips:

Please don't post screenshots in compressed JPG. It looks like ass with all those artifacts. Post them in PNG, or I can't judge the image well.
