Hi there,

I'm a newbie in game development and I really feel that I have a lot to learn in terms of game design.

Are there any blogs or websites out there that talk primarily about good game design? I know Gamasutra already, I'm wondering if there are others out there that cover this topic.

Thanks!

  • Clint Hocking's Blog - He designed Splinter Cell 1 & 3 (essentially the good ones) and FarCry 2. Man is a great designer and writes some interesting stuff.
  • The Blog for Chris Hecker's Spy Party - Hecker has done all sorts of technical stuff that goes over my head, but also worked on Spore for a bit. He's independent now, working on Spy Party. He's most known for his speeches and GDC rants (particularly one where he called the Wii 'two Gamecubes duct-taped together', which has entered the enthusiast press' lexicon, despite being one of the least refined arguments Hecker has presented).
  • Gausswerks - This dude is brilliant. His post on Rockstar open-world design should be required reading.

Jimbob, thanks for LostGarden! I was looking for this ever since I've read his post on the brainstorming process. Brilliant stuff!

I feel that game design's a bit like philosophy. There's plenty of books on the stuff, but you've really got to sit around and discuss things through to get better. Or even better, find a tough problem and try to find a solution.

That said, this is my favorite blog:
http://jonathansfox.wordpress.com/

I don't always agree with him, but he makes some good points, writes them in a fun to read manner, and gives me something to think about.

My friend has a pretty interesting blog on the topic of game design.  His name is Dan Kline and he's a designer at EA Maxis who also worked for Crystal Dynamics and Blizzard prior to that.

This list provides a lot of practical guidelines.  I return to it every so often for inspiration and advice.
