My first impression when I learned about GIMP was "I do not have high hopes for a program that reminds me of Mighty Jill Off."
After using GIMP several times, my impression changed. To "why the hell is this program so needlessly complicated?"

Why do I need to click on everything twice in order to use different instruments?
Why is it physically impossible to move a single selected item?

I find that what I need right now is a program that is free, and that functionally is as close to identical to MS Paint without having to download Windows onto my Mac. I'd use a PC, but my screen is glitched up to the ninth power.

And no GIMP. Seriously.

I'm not sure why you would look for a MS Paint clone but I agree about GIMP. I would rather paint with a steaming turd than try GIMP again. Anyways I found a list at the link below that may be useful for you as it shows a MS Paint clone for the Mac:

Someone mentioned Paintbrush in the MSPaint Art thread about a week ago. Maybe that would suit your needs.

Pixen is a mac-only program targeted at pixel art and pixel animation.  Other than crashing a lot, it's pretty slick.  Unfortunately it's not under active development.  Or maybe it actually is, now.  Seems some guy named "phillip e c" has taken up working on it again:  https://github.com/philippec/Pixen

http://paintbrush.sourceforge.net/  is pretty much a straight clone of MSPaint, and IS under active development.

Personally I use photoshop, but I understand that's not up your alley.  Noir

It probably would be if I could be arsed to actually use software I need to pay for.

Gimp is nice, but it's not a pixel art program.

Sketchbook Express is free and it's a good piece of software. It's not suitable for pixel perfect work though if that's what you're after.

Paintbrush, mentioned above, is really the correct answer.
