Birdman was pretty good, but I thought it should have ended where he shot himself rather than "oh the bullet you shot through your brain actually only hit your nose and everyone loved it".

alos it was lame that the hobbit 3 just cut short of havbing elves and dwarves stabbing each other. would have loved that rather than having them cut short right when they were going to fight because deus orc machina showed up.

birdman was really, really, really great but imo gone girl is film of the year. it's both less ambitious and more, somehow, technically wizardlike with career-best performances all around while still being at its core a completely dumbfuck thriller but with a deftness of technique and thematic resonance so layered it becomes transcendental. disgusting imo that it got only one oscar nom at all, double disgusting that none of them were for best director or adapted screenplay. similarly bad: nightcrawler didn't get best actor nom for jake gyllenhall? really now, really. really now

realllllly now

the oscars are trash

I thought whiplash had great acting, a decent plot, and great cinematography. The part I didn't quite like was the slight repetitiveness of the drumming. I can't really tell good drumming from bad, so showing a guy tapping a drum for 5 mins straight gets boring.

Just watched John Wick and it was surprisingly good, next up on my list: mocking jay pt1, gone girl, the equalizer, the judge and a few more. Also 22 Jump Street and The Theory of everything are good recent movies :D

Having been in a band for a few years might have helped though.

jesus christ it was fantastic

as far as the rest go, whiplash was probably tied for 2nd with nightcrawler for me, with birdman in 3rd. i still haven't seen boyhood, amazingly, but. But.

jk simmons is fucking scary as fuck in whiplash

edit: oh fuck me, grand budapest hotel was this year. damn. i think that's probably a tie at 2 or 3. i loved it a lot but it's not quite fantastic mr. fox, is it now

i've never played any instrument or listened to jazz, but I still loved it (and after watching it I rewatched Sakamichi no Apollon which is also about jazz and I started to listen to jazz) Smiley

It should go to Boyhood. I liked Birdman as a technical feat, both thematically and in terms of cinematography, but it's largely entertaining pulp. Gone Girl was very well executed for what it is, but otherwise felt like the typical far-fetched thriller (you can feel yourself suspending disbelief over some of the dumb actions taken). Grand Budapest Hotel was awesome.. some people seem to think "too precious" but it won me over.

God yes Interstellar's music was epic!

Birdman was pretty sweet too. Though, I missed the critical last 5 minutes because if I didn't leave the theater then and there I was literally going to piss myself.

Also, apparently I REALLY need to see gone girl.

It's not that good, it's overcomplicated for the sake of overcomplicating the story with infinite twists, and the ending is dissapointing and some characters' choices/actions are odd to say the least
