Sonic spin dashes Mario, Mario jumps on Gordon, and Gordon fires a very precisely adjusted catapult that launches a rock at the exact point Sonic will cross in about 2.7 seconds

I'd also try and move away, if possible, from the traditional Fire/Ice ones, purely in the interests of making your game stand out against others. Mechanics that haven't been tried before - like, say, creatures that are intelligent can be hurt with psychic attacks, while animal/brainless ones can't - sounds more interesting than fire/fire resistant and ice/ice resistant, even if the underlying mechanic is almost the same.
