I just bought a new laptop for college, but it's rather lacking in the graphics department, so I can't play any games that I would if I were at home on my desktop.
so my question to you is, what games do you keep on your laptop (if you have one) and why? If you don't have one, what games do you think would work well on one?

If you have suggestions for me, I am rather fond of rpgs, and shmups. :D

Well, I actually just bought a new laptop so I can pretty much play a lot of newer stuff (graphics scaled down). However, the laptop that I replaced sounds like it would probably be on par with yours. If your into RPGs and you don't already know about Morrowind (Game of the Year edition) I highly recommend it. Just the sheer amount of great mods from the MW modding community definitely makes the game more then worth it (I've had the game for 4 years and I still play it regularly!). As for Shmups I would have to direct you to this page written by none other then the inimitable Derek Yu! And of course there is always this handy-dandy list of games which most, if not all, should run just fine on your computer.

Hope that helps Smiley

I would have bought an epic amazing laptop, but I was almost at my credit for the month and i needed it ASAP. I'm not sure if it could play Morrowind, but i'll try it. and thanks for the links, I will check them out.

Recently there has been released this http://basiliskgames.com/book1.html old-school RPG. Developers made an attempt to recreate atmosphere of old RPGs like Ultima, Might & Magic etc. I have played it and I can tell you that it is worth your time.
Also there is a bunch of old RPGs like Baldur's Gate (1,2), Torment, Fallout, Icewind Dale, Arcanum an so on. If you haven't played these games yet I definitely recommend them to you.

I've heard about Eschalon book 1, but not particularly fond of isometric view (2d is great! :D) but I might check it out if the story is worthwhile.

I'd recommend some Dwarf Fortress, but laptops don't usually have a separate numpad, which makes things a bit more awkward. Still playable, but awkward. Smiley

I've tried dwarf fortress so many times, i couldn't even count, each time for about four hours, but I never really managed to get into it.

Fallen Empires just entered open beta this week.  It is a multiplayer FPS designed for people in precisely your situation: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/?p=1986

I would also suggest Gametap: http://www.gametap.com/

As long as you aren't relying on the touchpad get Freespace 2. It's free now. Unless you don't dig on space combat sims like I do of course. The FSOInstaller makes getting it set up super easy.

Also I'm sure you don't need to be told this but get Doom 2 on there with an appropriate source port and start downloading wads. Also Skulltag FTW.

Cave Story
It could work.

Is this a Vista rig? That could be limiting than the whole no mouse thing. At least you can buy USB mice.

My fallback plan for when graphics pass me up is interactive fiction.  Here some of my favorites:

MAME is essential. While 16 bit shooters and fighting games get a lot of the attention, the 8bit, two-button games are where my heart lies. Frogger is unstoppable. Discs of Tron is best with a mouse (in the arcade it had an analogue dial).

Also you should hit up the Underdogs, browse through their featured page maybe.

Metal Slug !!!
It is very funny to play that at University during boring lectures, many peoble are watching  Grin

Primary all emulated games are working very well.
There are
Snes: Mario, Secret of Mana,
nes: ninja gaiden, nintendo worldcup
Sega: sonic
neo Geo: Metal Slug, Garou Mark of the Wolves
Playstation: Metal Gear Solid, Kula World
Dreamcast: Ikaruga
CPS2: Marvel vs. Capcom
GBA: Kuru Kuru Kururin
GBC: Zelda DX
DOS: Prince of Persia

I've played all those games on emulators, and they are working very well.

ePSXe is a pain in the ass to configure. And when I try to play Metal Gear Solid, the cutscenes and gameplay go for a few seconds, then stop, then go again, then stop.
They freeze.

And I dunno what to do.

And yes, I am using my own disc, as my PS2 is currently in need of repair.

God I hate that. PSX emulation is mostly bugfree and smooth, but you need to spent ages finding the right plugins/configuration to work with that one game you're trying to play. I made a habit of just playing that stuff on my PSP.
