SKULLBOY: The Granford Academy Guardian

  • ChevyRay ~ programming, graphics, design
  • Battlerager ~ music, design
  • Metaknightmaregirl ~ artwork

New Title Screen

We have an undead-pig problem... whose idea was it to put the pig pens next to the cemetary?

You can attack, uppercut, trip, smash, slam, jump on, and even pick up & toss enemies.

Sometimes I sit for half an hour just throwing pigs into eachother and watching them explode into a delightful mess of bones. Here I am whacking one with my bone club.

Skullboy can long-jump, wall-kick, grab onto ledges and flip himself up... He can even roll around, and perform quick-dashes to quickly avoid dangers from above. So if you're really good with the controls, you can get to all sorts of places (and OUT OF).

Uh-oh. He saw me. Time for plan B.

Some other tidbits...

And there will also be a whole myriad of game options. You'll be able to completely customize the controls, the music and sound, and you'll even have a bunch of graphics options. Here's Scanlines on a 2x scaled screen (i cropped the shot).

And here's a taste of what you'll be listening to while playing! Smiley

Did somebody say concept art?  Well these are more or less doodles but oh well... Wink

Please excuse the sloppy work.  My boyfriend just bought me a tablet and I am trying to adjust to using it.  I've had it about a day, and I think I'm getting pretty good.   Smiley

And yes, that is a vampire pig.

Oh, and Chev, LOVE the title pixel art there.   Kiss

Good job so far, but I think the tileset on that pic there needs a bit more variety, if you know what I mean. Details, different kind of ground and stuffs.

Awesome new pixels, Chev!  Love your sig!   :D

I'll try and get some more artwork up sometime today.  More characters and environments, you know.   Smiley

And Gainsworthy, yes, there will be fish.  There is an item called the Fish Grapple that works kinda like the Hookshot in Zelda.  Maybe I'll draw a fish character as well.   Wink

Thanks for your support everyone!

For sure. Right now I'm busy programming, though, so I'm just going to pixel the bare minimum and work on the detail-work later.

Pixels + programming is a lot of work Shocked Which is why I'm looking for an assistant pixel artist.

!!

Musician, and good pal of mine, Cornandbeans, is currently getting started on the soundtrack for the game. The conversation was great:

ME: So would you be interested in doing music for my project?
CAB: Music? Hell yeah!
CAB: Just give me a list and descriptions and I'll get on it.
ME: *shitting myself*

"Give me a list" he says. This guy writes music like some people make toast. Quoted from his LastFM page:

Quote
Ian Slider (cornandbeans) is a young electronic music artist from Louisville, KY (USA). His main styles are Drum n Bass and Trance, but he also produces Techno, Classical, and Ambient music. He uses his guitar, cello, keyboard, bass along with Reason 3 and FL Studio 7 to produce his music.

Haha, this looks incredibly awesome already.
I love the art, and I love platformers. And vampire-pigs. Or something.

Man, there are a lot of music composers on these forums. What kinds/filetypes of songs do you write?

Yes, yes, there are.

Because music is simmmple to do.   Beer!

Well, filetype would probably be .ogg as I just recently started using ModPlug (= .it), and style ... I am mostly inspired by Metal, Video Game Music (duh!) and Celtic Music, and when it comes to a platformer, one could expect something between Plok and Kirby with some celtic flavour and Iron Maiden-type harmonized leads tossed in for good measure.  Gentleman (That does not imply distorted guitars, by the way!  Wink)

I know that music only comes into play kinda late in the developement process, but yeah, I would love doing something for this.

If not, that's all fine, too.
I'd probably just write an alternate soundtrack for the game and replace all the files afterwards, hahahah  :D

Also, I listened to some of Cornandbeans' stuff. Very well done, and/but I am really curious what he will come up with for the game.
Music sets the mood in a game like nothing else. Here's hoping for an awesome soundtrack, no matter who will end up doing it!  Beer!

Well, keep in touch Smiley because if I'm not comfortable with CAB's stuff, then I'll definitely be ringing your bell.

Cornandbeans does a lot of metal, d&b, and trance stuff on his newgrounds, but we've worked together before, and he's excellent at capturing themes and emotions in his songs when he's got boundaries to work within. But we'll see Smiley

EDIT: Hey man, anything you can show me? I'd like to hear some of your stuff Smiley and whenever you've got the time to write some tunes, just let me know and I can give you some specs. I'd like the game to have a very lively and abundant soundtrack.

Winged vampig, you say?

I know the wings are terrible, but hey, getting used to this tablet is serious business.   :D  But, a better look at the wing...

I have more on the way.   Smiley
