Juhana continued the blog post series on BADLAND's visual inspirations. Check it out in our dev blog.

Also, we want to show some new BADLAND art. It’s a little sneak peak to the future, what ever that means…

I hope the spinning cog hints at Industrial meets Nature theme, like in Oddworld - i love that!

First pictures give me a feeling of peaceful home. I don't really like the characters in the middle, but really like the hanging dude on the right (first pic).. go figure Smiley

Good luck on this it looks fantastic! It's also really a relief when i see the visual inspiration isn't from OTHER GAMES!

Absolutely stunning graphics. More action adventure games are always a good thing, especially ones with graphics like that. I hope you bring it to PC soon!

Time to show you what it is like after dawn in BADLAND. And, what’s that thingy in the water? What do you guys think? Smiley

Btw, Juhana made that picture using only in-game assets.

We have so much to tell you about BADLAND but rather than writing about all the stuff, we are working hard to show you first gameplay video footage from BADLAND in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned!

First gameplay video and screenshots are here!

VIDEO:

BADLAND is an atmospheric side-scrolling action adventure located in a gorgeous forest full of various inhabitants, trees and flowers. Although the forest looks like it’s from some beautiful fairytale, there seems to be something terribly wrong. The player controls one of the forest’s inhabitants to discover what’s going on. Through his journey he discovers astonishing amount of imaginative traps and obstacles.

BADLAND takes side-scrollers to the next level with its innovative physics based gameplay combined with the extremely beautiful atmospheric graphics and audio.

BADLAND has been designed specifically for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch and uses one-touch controls to give the player the best possible control mechanics. In addition, the graphics have been designed to fully use the retina Retina Display of these devices. The result is an highly immersive, addicting gaming experience.

More info coming later this year. Meanwhile, follow this thread, subscribe to our blog, like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to get the latest news about BADLAND. Stay tuned! Smiley

All feedback more than welcome!

Oh wow, this looks really immersive judging by that video. Time and time again, I'm blown away by the gamedev talent up here in the north.

The black foreground where everything of the game happens looks bad. Sorry, i had to say it.
The background is so extremely delightful and detailed, that it shits out the foreground.
The grey extra shade doesn't help one tinybit.

If that image i quoted up there ^ was a screenshot, then i'd buy it in a heart beat.

I want to pull Limbo into this, as it has the black foreground aesthetics as well as the perspective. Limbo does this well, as the foreground looks like the main scene of action since the background isn't as detailed. Limbo "cheats" a bit, since it's black and white but that only makes it a bit easier to not get side tracked with amazing colorful backgrounds.

I don't think you guys (devs) are going to change it because of this, but i'm not going to pick up the game because, if i wanted to go look at pretty art; Without having alot of stuff in the way, i'd go to a art gallery.

Thanks for all the feedback!

Cellusious: I understand. However, we think that the black foreground and colorful background makes a beautiful contrast.

We just updated our blog with news.

We are happy to say that we are aiming to launch BADLAND for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch on February/March!

And here are some brand new screens:

These screenshots are from the later part of the game. The sun has set and dusk has arrived to the BADLAND forest. The beautiful place starts to look like something else..

BADLAND is divided into four sections: Dawn, Noon, Dusk and Night. In our first gameplay video, we showed one of the Dawn levels. The Noon was shown with one screenshot a month ago. And now we showed the first two screenshots from the Dusk. As the day progresses in BADLAND, the forest becomes more dangerous making surviving more challenging. There will be 10 levels in each of the sections, which makes a total of 40 levels. But, that’s just in the launch – we are going to keep making more content and levels after the launch.

BADLAND also features at launch 12 different power-ups which change the gameplay in various ways. The first gameplay video showed ones which change the character’s size, making it feel heavier or lighter and ones that make the character spin leading to a new kind of gameplay. The video also showed ones which make the character fly faster and slower, and also ones that clone the character into multiple characters leading to extremely versatile gameplay (there can be tens of clones for the player to control at the same time). The screenshots above introduce a new really cool power-up which we haven’t talked about yet. Rather than telling what it does, we’ll keep you teased a while longer and show you what it does in another gameplay video early next year. It’s that cool.

But even before that video, we are going to show you something really cool straight away in the beginning of next year.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone! Next year is going to be BAD! Smiley

We are happy to announce that BADLAND will feature local multiplayer for up to four players playing in the same device! Here’s a quick video showing it in action in a noon level:

The multiplayer is all about survival of the fittest – with no rules. It’s completely okay to push your opponent to a spinning circular saw in order to survive. The multiplayer shares the same easy to grasp controls and the gameplay mechanics as the single player, so it’s easy to pick any friend (or foe) to play against you. However, skills matter in the end. The physical gameplay makes sure that every game is different.

BADLAND will feature 12 multiplayer levels at launch, and we will keep adding more levels in updates.

Here's some screenshots:
