This post is totally going to sound like an informerical, but...
I never could listen to music when I code. My personal MP3 collection is too... far ranging to just run on a playlist and I don't want to waste active brain power picking out a soundtrack, so I generally listened to nothing, or perhaps streamed a local radio station over the internet.
Then I found Slacker Radio.
This is absolutely perfect, whoever did the algorithms deserve kudos, they just do a wonderful job of finding appropriate music. I search for a band or song, then sit back and listen to hours and hours of amazingly on topic music.
Generally I stick to old school pop punk like NOFX, Me First, Bad Religion, Pennywise, etc... or I go for an 80s kick with Violent Femmes, Dead Kennedys, etc. Or if I want sligtly more modern, I go with Dropkick Murphys or Against Me.
I like heavier music, ( when driving or working out ), but not when coding.

Woo, OCR for the win. Oil Spill by analoq is my go-to track. Also uplifting trance because happyhappy (A&B, Armin, Dash Berlin etc.), but anything without words will do. |

Oh, you must have misread me (or I didn't clarify). I said I normally don't like repetitive stuff, but for coding it's perfect (meaning I do like repetitive music for coding, as opposed to what I like when listening to music normally).
Ahh yes I did misread you sorry. It is perfect for coding  . I still listen to electronic stuff while I'm not coding however, but it's probably more progressive house and songs with vocals. |

Mine is much more of a clatter than a click, especially when programming. I listen to Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Flashbulb, random youtube mixes, Deep Forest, Jack Johnson, The Corrs, Killswitch Engage, some old Escape the Fate (lololol), The Used, A bunch of concertos... Whatever hits my speakers basically. |

I gave this a go and absolutely hated it Not for me, very distracting noises without much melody, reminded me of venetian snares on crack played super slowmo, if that makes any sense. |

If I'm coding tricky stuff then only silence will do, but usually I'm not doing anything particularly tough - just grinding through implement/test/debug cycles. So most of the time I'm listening to this sort of thing: my current Spotify playlist ...usually on shuffle. |
