for those of you still playing, how quickly do you rank up relative to the number of packs you've opened, whether with real/fake money?
I could do rank 18-17 from free, but after that I need to win packs in the arena.

just build the cards in the card forge thingy. you can drain other cards for points to make the ones you want, blah blah blah.
sadly, after figuring that out the game sort of lost its fun for me :/

yeah my first super valuable card I drained and got 8 cards out of it, and felt real cool.
the drain ratios are low though, like 8-to-1. so you've got to win a little.

I'm testing a warrior deck made with only basic cards, playing ranked matches (rank 19-18) and after playing 25 matches I found the win rate to be almost 50% (12 wins 13 losses). The longest win streak was 4 matches. I'm going to play 25 more games, but this game is looking insanely balanced, what kind of sorcery is this?? I've beaten decks with legendaries, murloc decks, hunter minion spam decks, and I've also been beaten with all sorts of decks... I decided to give this basic-only deck a spin after reading this article ( http://www.polygon.com/2014/5/9/5699178/hearthstone-pay-to-win) and I'm amazed by the results. I thought I would at best win like 25-30% of the matches in ranked play... Blizzard sure as hell know their way around game design.

They are vigilant with balance, and community feedback. They run the numbers again, and again, and again....

Yeah, they have number-crunching and analysis perfected, damn... I'd love to have a look at how they assess game balance on their titles. I love that about Blizz, they keep patching and tweaking their games pretty much forever. I also love how in a digital TCG they can balance cards, unlike say, Magic, where if a card is too unbalanced/plain broken they have to "ban" it from tournaments and the like. I think Wizards of the Coast should look at Hearthstone closely, they should probably try to make a similar offering for Magic.

For example Unleash the Hounds owned me all the time, then they nerfed it.
That's a Hunter combo card.

If you win exactly half your games in Ranked, you'll actually rise in rank because of the bonus stars awarded for multiple wins. I think getting to Legend in this game is primarily a matter of persistence. If you have a decently good deck and just dump hundreds of matches into it, you'll eventually get to the top.

I like Hearthstone quite a bit. The games are really quick (most of the time). One complaint I have is that you can't do anything to your opponent while they are taking their turn (with the exception of "secrets"), but I suppose that mechanic would interrupt the flow of the game.
