I totally just remembered a 3D platformer that just came out not to long ago: http://store.steampowered.com/app/260160/?snr=1_239_860__1305

I've never played it before, but I feel like I should mention it Tongue

Sure it's a beautiful game and even though it claims inspiration from great 3d platformers\collect-a-thons of yore, a platformer in the strictest sense of the word it is not as it doesn't have a jump button.

Bionic Commando didn't have a jump button either (they replaced jump with swinging around).

To be fair 3D platformers in general need much less jumping than 2D ones, for the simple reason that in the latter the only way to put obstacles is in the vertical axis (making jumping over them pretty much mandatory), while on 3D you have another horizontal axis to use instead (which is also why many 3D platformers make traps about as wide as the path or make the paths thin for most of the game). This may even be the main reason why 3D platformers didn't take off as widely as their 2D counterparts, designing for good platforming is that much harder.

All of this said...

Yeah WTF =/ Also RT, out of all buttons?

I am making 3D platformer in Unity right now (art style: Untextured, flat-shaded polygons), and it would be done by now if not for one nasty bug I've got regarding character movement.

I read the first part and the end is exactly how I imagine it back then ... unity engine is not suited for serious 3D platformer, thrust me I lost some hair there, I'll try again, and i'll try godot, the description of the collision engine looks way more promising.

Hmm did anyone mention De Blob? Not quite within 5 years iirc, but some vertical aspects and collectathon/completionist mentality.

Also a lot of fun!

I know I really got into Sonic Generations and am eager to dive into Cloudbuilt, but I'm not entirely sure that's what you're going for here. I Am Level is good collect-a-thon material, but I'm not certain that is, either (it's 2D, among other qualities). I did enjoy Super Mario 3D World too, what of it I've gotten to play at friends' places.

I've always wanted to see a follow-up to Blasto - it seemed to have pretty great level design and gameplay mechanics, even if it plays a little like Earthworm Jim meets Duke Nukem 3D. And they made situations in that game pretty interesting using only a few widgets and objects at a time, which isn't easy to do.

Sadly, I have ZERO 3D-working experience, and don't think my current 2GB RAM is enough to take on such a thing. :/ Also, it's rare that I see a "3D platforming game" hit the sweet spot in its platforming. Either there's way too much ground, or way too little of it.
