Also, is that triceratops smiling? Because that's pretty cute :D.

haha, actually that's not a smile...it's supposed to be a horn... but now I'm just wondering!

I would really love to see a few without filter, I think the clean vector look would really suit this well!

The animations and designs were produced with that specific effect in mind, so without it, it actually doesn't look that nice (messy joints, unclean edges and colors etc). This would be quite some extra work to clean everything up and get a descent non-pixel art style. So not so likely to happen for this little game (but next game maybe!)

what if there's a big bronto that he slides down the back of and can jump off of again
That's an idea we had to, but it didn't work as well as we hoped, especially that was a little weird and inconsistent to be able to jump/slide on the bronto and die if you do the same on the other dinos. It also messed with the game mechanics.

What if you made it clear that there was only one big bronto? Like at the start of the level you slide off that into the gameplay and you never see something that big or iconic again?

Yeah that's an option, could be worth exploring thanks for the suggestion.

The settings menu system is almost done...here's preview:

This looks great.

The one thing missing is the "karate" part I think. Would be nice if after jumping over 10 dinos, your 11th jump would be a tornado kick or something that can be used to attack. Or you can collect a floating star/whatever powerup that makes your next jump a jump-kick. Something to extend the mechanics and reward a bit without losing the one-button part.

For ducking, you don't need any player input. Just automatically duck under certain enemies in certain configurations. Learning when not to jump is enough of a challenge I'd say.

Thanks for the  input everyone. Big step today for the game... getting the first internal beta version on the app store... such a hassle to get there! The game is developed with GameMaker Studio, which is great but figuring out how to get all the proper settings to export an "acceptable" build by apple was definitely not an easy task. But now that this part is all figured out... it's time to spend more time on improving and polishing the game itself! Trying hard to think of ways to make the gameplay more engaging over time. There's really two options that we see right  now:

1 - Find a nice way to make the Karateka duck (probably to avoid diving birds, or jumping dinos... but could also be other natural elements too, like meteorites)
2 - Find a way to give the Karateka some temporary extra power. For example if he catches a glowworm... he's invincible for a few seconds

So if everyone has ideas, feel free to pitch in!

Cheers.

Yeah, loving this

I'm getting some flashback to International Karate for the player? Even if not, its a good thing.

Is the jump variable height? And by that I mean is it tap to jump or hold down to jump? If you do the hold down method, when you release your finger then he could drop back down quicker, which would allow you to create tougher challenges

Also maybe the double jump is an attack too e.g. the character is doing a roundhouse kick while moving upwards. And he has to attach some smaller dinosaurs to get powerups out of them such as invincibility or a super attack that would take down bigger dinos

Jumps have unique height, that's a decision we made early on to make the enemies waves easier to design. Timing is everything, a few millisec too early or too late and your dead... the challenge was to develop interesting waves that are difficult but possible. So Variable hight would've made this super tricky to implement.

Punch block kick...
Another important decision we made early on (and I just have mentioned this earlier) is that we don't want to hurt the dinos... so no punch/kicks or anything violent!

Making some good progress... time to start working on some marketing material (trailer, icons, screenshots).. I'll post some progress soon!

Finally submitted the game to the app store today! Hoping to get the approval shortly and if everything is approved, release the game early month. Not much as changed since the last posts, we've been essentially working fixing some bugs, polishing a few things and preparing some marketing/design material for the launch!

Here's a poster made in collaborations with the talented mikuloctopus.com. We're also working on a very short trailer. Will post some progress in a couple of days!

While waiting for the AppStore's approval... we're making some progress on the trailer... here's a tiny preview. Still a work in progress, but gives a good idea of where we're going.

We're still working on the official trailer, but in the meantime, here's a teaser that gives an idea of the whole experience:

By the way, the game will be free, no IAP. Hope you'll give it a try and enjoy it when it'll be out!
