Hello,

I'm starting a devlog for my ios project "Run-A-Whale". It's an infinite runner made with unity.

I'm developing the game during my freetime. Since it's a one man game, everything is going slowly but i'm happy enough of the result to start showcasing what i have done.

When i started, my main goal was to create a cool loking 3d game without any texture and realtime lighting, so everything is faked by shader.

Gameplay-wise, i have a lot to do but i'm trying te create a simple but fun game with only one touch input. (tap --> dive/release--> jump).
Right now, the game is running smoothly at 60 fps on mobile.

What you have to start looks really good! I like the dive/jump mechanic. Couple of questions about that - can you simply hold the dive button to stay underwater, or is it timed? Will you be adding underwater obstacles as well, so there are times when you have to jump?

thanks for your reply,
Yes you can hold the input to stay underwater, right now there is an oxygen timer to limit that. I'm planning underwater obstacles but i need to figure out a good solution to spawn everything in a smart way, with difficulty progression ect... (right now it's pure random.

I did a new rock today and i wanted to share my textureless assets pipeline.

- I first block the basic shape of the model with simple primitives in 3dsmax
- Quick Zbrush sculpting + polygon decimation
- radiosity baking to vertex color
- Custom  shader in unity and that's it!

Wow, very good use of shaders. Everything is looking sexy fine! Have you looked into using mesh deformation to make the water ripple when you dive into it? That along with with the particles would give more weight to the whale

Thank you !

I already thought about water deformation but i have no idea how to do that and it sounds a bit costly.  Waaagh!
I will investigate a bit more on that topic.

Thanks, it's fast for debugging but it will be slower in the final game.

Oh, I didn't notice that. I made an infinite runner once too, where you had to jump through the water (as a merman who could transform into a dolphin, which is close enough to the whale!) that had a quick day and night cycle. :D This looks so much better tho. But interesting quinkydink nonetheless!

Thanks, do you have any screenshots of your game?

So, the octopuss is done, i changed the eyes to a more human shape and i think it looks much better now.

now it's time to code !  Yawn
