This is crazy but I'm in love with it. The gifs looks pretty good.

Impressive how much you're able to fit in the 64x64 limitation. Has the plot already been figured out or is it still a work in progress?

This is fantastic. Constraints definitely encourage creativity.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words! It really means a lot.

I love it so so much! I know it's super early atm but the player movement looks very floaty.

Could be! We're so early in development that we're going to lay down some scenes and see what feels best. Polish hasn't even begun, so everything will change quite a bit I'm sure.

The run is indeed floaty. We're working on getting half-pixel movement without using sub-pixel movement. It's tricky stuff, but Sam's pulling it off, along with a camera that lets you look some ways ahead, so that exploration feels more open.

To be honest, I'm surprised at how confined the overworld of some new jrpgs feel (bravely default, looking at you). I don't expect exploration will be a problem even at this size. Battles is another thing altogether, but we'll cross that bridge soonish.

And no, we don't have a full plot for the game yet.

Step one:
replace all x and y movement with xx and yy
Step two:
x = round(xx);
y = round(yy);
Step three:
Profit.

Wow! Everything about this looks fantastic. The art work is indeed inspiring so I can understand how Sam wanted to mock something up. I think 'being able to do a lot with little' is one of the key skills that separate "good indie developers" from "indie developers"...

It definitely has the potential to be an epic little game!

All the best!

Or you could simply round the coordinates while drawing. Try cieling or floor if it looks too choppy.

Reading the description (jrpg in 64x64 pixels) I was thinking "what a stupid idea"... but I still clicked the link and...

Just stumbled upon this; super crazy, but awesomely implemented idea you have here!

Question though: Are those fonts from the first page final? I personally think it looks like they could use some tweaking, especially with some lettering being bigger than it needs to be. I do pixel lettering all the time, and so unless it's for style, I think some adjustments would make the fonts consistent and save some space in the end.

I don't wanna just outright post a new font-face and offend you, but would you be interested in me PMing you my ideas?

Again, such a cool idea. Can't wait to see where this ends up in the final game. :D

Hi there! Totally open to critique, no worries and no offense taken. Show us in public! Bear in mind that all our pixeling for this project is taking serious pains to avoid, whenever possible, banding pixel clusters, and loosely connected single pixels like these:

About a year ago I spent a while trying to find the perfect 3x3 G, and while I discovered such a thing isn't really possible*

*they all look like other letters, or like weird gibberish

I have here my personal favourite, for your consideration.

This G doesn't look like anything really alone, but that's probably better than looking like a different letter out of context (your G looks like a D, if you put it on its own -- it's totally passable in context, but if I look at that particular glyph in the wrong way, it's a D.)

Anyway, your game looks great! I remember when these mockups were floating around. The gif looks lovely.

I'll now cease my meddling. Good luck with your game!! Smiley

Huh, neat idea with the G! I never thought that would work, but reading the mockup it seems to be perfect!

NightPearl looks very cool and your origin story make this devlog even better Smiley

64x64 is a big constraint but it also help your game by being really different from a lot of other games.

I'm eager to see more !
