the games major at my school is called "interactive media and game development" instead of "video game development", but i'm not sure whether that's because they actually do other interactive media aside from video games, or because they're trying to sound more like a legitimate major

The easiest would be "electronic games", since at their base they're all running on some sort of circutry. Not sure how that'd be much more catchy or useful than what we've got now.

I'm liking gameware and electronic games. On a related side note has anyone here read "Understanding Comics"? Great book at explaining things like the difference in mediums

Guys, originally I wanted to rename video games to something less specific, not more. What I meant was that video games needed an overarching name. If you talk about one book, it is called a book. The genre of culture it is in is called literature. If you talk about a movie, it is called a movie. However, the genre of culture it is located in is called film. If you speak about a video game, it is called a video game. However, it belongs to the genre of culture called video games. I was thinking that the genre of culture for video games needs a new name. I realized too late that films were originally called films because of rolls of film. (I'm too young for that! ) Anyways, it was a hasty idea thought up while sleepy, so.....

Core of the problem is that people are embarrassed to say they like games, and that's not going to change with a different name.

If people are ashamed to say they play games, it means that the image of games isn't thought of very highly outside of the gamer community. Something should be done to change that image.

I don't think most people are ashamed to talk about games. Maybe in certain high-flying circles, like upper management or politicians it could reflect poorly, but in casual company I've never seen anyone embarrassed to discuss games. Usually it either ends because the person I'm talking to doesn't play games and therefore doesn't have anything to contribute on that subject, or they're just not interested in games and moves on to something else.
I've never encountered a person who seemed embarrassed to admit they played video games, though maybe they could be hiding it extremely well.

If she didn't say yes, it was truly never meant to be.
