'go north, find sanctuary.'

horror, open world, and survival games all seem to have the same cliched mechanics and design. I'm tired of it, so I'm attempting to make my own.
'and thus' is a non-linear, open-world, survival horror game I'm developing. There's no overarching 'creepy story', jump scares happen as a result of your poor decisions (instead of 'gee I don't know what to do now so I'll just run around until something happens'), and threats will all have original designs, with a focus on mystery and the supernatural to invoke 'scariness' rather than gory, obvious monsters.

Your goal? Go north.

To survive, follow two simple rules:
If it looks dangerous, it is.
If it's dangerous, run away/hide.

Agreed with the above ^^^^:

Following.

It's such a straightforward concept, and I think because of that, it'll work fabulously!

First Dungeon Gif.
There will be various 'dungeons' in and thus. You can avoid some of them, but eventually you'll have to go through one. There are different themed types that have different challenges. Below is a gif of a 'bunker dungeon'. It's an idea I've had for a long time, but never knew what to do with. Basically, you have to navigate a a pitch black labyrinth by these small lights (works surprisingly well, actually), while keeping your ears peeled for the guardian that's stalking you. The goal is to find the pieces of the code and then enter it into the terminal to escape. the terminal and each code fragment have a unique noise (beep pattern, really) that you can use to find them.
You can outrun the guardian by sprinting, but doing so causes you to breathe heavy, which makes it harder to hear it. Also, the labyrinth is designed with no dead ends; so if you're not careful you can run right into the guardian.

ok FINALLY back on this. Had a crazy semester then worked all winter etc. etc.

Here's some crappy gifs of this trap I've been working on. You can also see the compass and horizon marker UI I made (it's toggleable). I'm mostly just messing around in this gif. it's kind of hard to tell what's going on; basically the trap loops you back to the center until you figure out how to escape.

Here's me solving it, see if you can figure it out.
