I'm no expert on the subject, but I'd check out the Chzo mythos, to start: 5 Days a Stranger 7 Days a Skeptic Trilby's Notes 6 Days a Sacrifice

my friend orchard-l's game missing was also pretty scary to me: http://studioeres.com/games/missingit's ohrrpgce though so it may not work on modern systems. try it and see. it's point and click adventure, infocom style, like shadowgate etc.

I need to get around to playing that sometime soon. I downloaded the big compilation of games from your site (the 100 MB version) and I've only played a couple. I'm going through them now, though.

Oh, whoops, LSD isn't freeware. My bad. It's a very good game though.

Definitely the Chzo mythos and The White Chamber. Another game I remember being particularly tense - but this was years ago, so take that with a grain of salt - was Mall Monster: http://www.ryanjuckett.com/games/student/2-mall-monster...which despite the corny name has you as a kid trapped in a mall. Alone. With a monster you can only hear.

Quite Soulless? Really? But actually, the Mondo games should also really be on this list as well.

Ben Jordan, Case 4: Horror at Number 50! Adventure game. Ben Jordan is a series of 8 games, of which 7 are complete, and the final one is in production. Cases are mostly standalone, but there's a bit of overarching storyline as well, so I'd play them in order. (First games are a little rough though, and while the other cases can be scary-ish at times, the 4th one is the only one I'd call horror.)

There's one called Haunting Hospital. I got stuck pretty early on when I tried it a few years ago and I never went back to try it again. The version available now is apparently an update of the one I tried.

The first game has had a high-quality remake. You are right though, I never got into the series because I couldn't be bothered with game number 2.

Was just playing The White Chamber. I had to stop after about half an hour because I was getting really fucking scared. I'm the only one awake right now and all the lights in the house are out. I'll try to get farther in the daytime. It's a fantastic game.

Demonophobia - Very, VERY, gory and sick japanese game, could qualify as guro. You play with a schoolgirl, trapped in hell, or... something, I don't know. There are tons of horrible deaths through all the game. Revolves mostly around finding your way through each level, solving a few puzzles and fighting bosses. It's interesting if you dig this kind of stuff. I still haven't been in the mood to play it. Xenophonia - By the same creator. It's only a demo, and haven't played it yet, but it seems better both in graphics and gameplay. It was pain in the ass to find the first time, so I just uploaded it myself. They're in japanese, without any kind of translation. There is no official site as far as I know. Looking through the internets, I've read the creator once in a while appears in a japanese BBS and that's it. In youtube there are lots of videos if someone wants to see them.

I just played and beat "The white chamber". Very nice, although in retrospect, I think the horror effects they used dont make much sense considering the story. It doesn't quite add up for me. Also, the best ending (while still being the most rewarding one) is still very disappointing (at least to me). Still, cool game! Thanks for the mention

Thanks for the suggestions so far!
The chzo mythos serie gave me a few scares when i played them the first time. I was kinda pissed at Trilby's Notes gameplay, but 7 days a Skeptic was just BRILLIANT.The lalaland series are more bizarre than scary, but gave me quite the chuckles and they did work on setting a tense and unsettling atmosphere.
Haven't played the white chamber yet, the art kind of turns me down from playing it, but i'll give it a try later.
