Mox Magus

This is a game I'm developing mostly for practice. It's loosely based on one of my previous (failed) projects (devlog here). It will be a 2D platformer with a very retro look and feel. I didn't yet decide on the story, but the main idea will likely revolve around the trials of a novice wizard.

I don't want to over-complicate this project so I don't expect any revolutionary game mechanics. The game will attempt to imitate the style of MS-DOS games I grew up with and is mostly intended for me to practice everything related to game development. The game will be free of charge if when finished.

I'm going to post updates to this thread and update the live version as I go.

Current status: 2%

Technical

Target: modern browsers. Game is based on my own HTML5 engine/thingie called Caya (GitHub link).

I'm going to be doing all the art assets myself.

Some tracks I composed for this game which may or may not make it into the final product. If they do make it they'll likely be modified, extended and/or changed beyond recognition.

I don't know if it's not finished yet or what but there's something interesting about the character art being solid color with different colored outlines. The lil castle in the distance looks cool, too. Keep at it!

Thanks!

@M0ssw0rm: yeah, it's a WIP; I don't want to get to coloring and shading the character until I'm 99% done with the outlines work.

Oh are those idle animations on the bottom? That's a nice touch.

I like the character! Is he inspired by Hocus Pocus or Loom?  Smiley

Maybe add some modern touch to it? Like EXP etc?

Yeah, those are a must Smiley

Thanks! Yeah, Hocus Pocus is definitely one of my biggest inspiration, I love that game. I'm familiar with Loom but I haven't really played it.

I feel this game will be as old school as it gets, but I'll consider some modern approaches... maybe Smiley

Development has halted a bit due to work but I'm getting there, next up on the to-do list is a ton of graphics and other assets.

For now, just a clip of oddly odd music: https://clyp.it/b4t5mla1

Also this doodle for the first level along with ideas for stuff to include, which may or may not be coherent:

The wrinkles are due to me spilling tea all over the paper - but in the end I managed to save it without losing precious information. Yay

I love where you are going with this. Also really nice music!

The secret is really cool too! (moving platform at the top) - it's a typical DOS platformer type of secret! :D Im in love with this project.
