Nexuiz tries to follow old school deathmatch gameplay. It's quite fun, but nothing innovative.

Nijiura Kakutou only has local multiplayer, but it's hilarious :D

I can't quite figure out why no one has mentioned Liero yet (http://liero.be/) but it deserves to be on this list.  It's only local multiplayer, but that doesn't make it any less awesome.  It just means you can turn and smile at your "friend" every time you kill him with a railgun or banana-bomb.

I can't believe how many hours we lost to this game...

Jump 'n' Bump is awesome, even though you need an emulator to run it.

There's a win32 port to run it. Heck, there's a port for almost every system out there.

The old v0002 beta of blockland is quite fun, if you have the RTB mod with it. It's not better than the retail version though.

So are there any Multiplayer freeware games that dont involve blasting the hell out of your friends?

Like maybe a freeware version of Settlers 3 where you can team up to defeat the nasty red folk? or a freeware version of dungeon siege where you can team up to defeat the nasty gremlins and go on adventures together?

Or maybe a freeware version of the Sims but networked.. then no one gets killed but the poor guy you locked in the bathroom by removing the door cos you didnt like him.

(yes.. I am a dreamer)

(hmm sounds like fun - this time I'll check my whole archive)
If you're looking for games with network co-op (PvE) multiplayer, you can choose from a variety of MMOGs (for example MapleStory) or team up with a friend in a bot-enabled team game in Armagetron (also supports SHS multiplayer) or Cube or Ramjets or some other advanced multiplayer game (some of which have already been mentioned in this thread). You can do the same on local scale (which I prefer) in Super Mario War or TOU. Then comes the third and best option: grab gamepads and go for a full SHS multiplayer adventure in games like Blip & Blop, C-Dogs, Heroes (cooperation is optional), Knight of Knights, Mogura, MultiHero, Operation Spacehog, SoulFu, Streets of Rage Remake, Tapan Kaikki Bloodshed and Tyrian 2000. (Unfortunately, I don't know any freeware network-enabled alternatives.) Or you can always play peaceful rhythm games like Frets on Fire (requires two guitar controllers or keyboards) or UltraStar (requires a few sound cards and microphones).

Hah, I thought that was going to be a link to TIGSaga Tongue I'm putting together a wiki for the open sequel, "TIGStory" as we speak.

And Indie Brawl... yeah, I'm afraid I had to put that on the backburner Sad I've got the engine basically ready (was using it for another game, in fact), but I've got too much on at the moment to dedicate any time to it right now. I'm thinking start of February I might have a little free time though. If that's too far away, then I don't mind if someone else wants to volunteer to code it...
