Old game, haven't played it in ages, and despite that its a quality game, its not for everyone. I never really could get into it myself.

Hell yes. Considering that it's free now, there's no excuse to not play it.

A really, really excellent and underrated game. I only played it in the last year or so after reading that it was Adam Cadre's favourite. I can see why he likes it.

This was an amazing game. I had it on one of those 100 Arcade game cd's. They were so awesome, but now they aren't because you can get every game on the stupid internet now.

I assume everybody knows this already: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

But if that links even gets one more person to play the game, my work is done.

Still the game that is my answer when people ask me "what was the best game ever"?

If nothing else, it was remarkably prescient in a lot of their gameplay decisions.  Aside from their marvelous writing, the most memorable thing about the game to me was how it really felt like there was a giant universe out there, doing things with or without you.  It didn't matter if you were watching or not, stuff was going on.  Wars were being fought, cultures were embroiled in their own activities, and so on.

Really, an amazing game on a lot of levels.

Pity about the 3rd one, really.

It's definitely the best space opera, that's for sure.

Let's not forget StarFlight. I think, overall, Star Control has better aliens, but SF has the whole Star Trek crew setup and deeper gameplay. It's a pity it's so hard to play. We'll see what happens with the fan sequel.

hot diggity, arne. that's flippin' awesome. especially the ball pit hideout. the spathi are probably my favorite race in SC. and the pkunk.

edit: WOAH. amazing idea rz. has had. for the next TIGSource gamenight (which should be soon, damn it) we need to play SC2 super melee!~

So yeah, this is probably my favorite game of all time.

Check out Arne's site, he has a bunch more awesome SC2 stuff.

Yeah, whatever happened to that, anyway? I tried to play the original SF once, but I could never really get the hang of it.

Also, I remember seeing a very promising SC2-style game called Black Skies, but I can't find it again. Anybody else know what I'm talking about? Googling it just gives some crappy band and, oddly enough, a game inspired by Ozzy Osbourne.   Undecided

Black Sky:
http://www.blackskygame.com/

Because SF and SC are so alike, I'm abandoning my SC and SF projects in favor of a generic space-trading-explorer-sim-rts engine which is datadriven so I can just plug in SC/SF stuff. Not that I will ever finish anything, but I'll make a page about it.

Holy cats black sky looks amazing!

I'm going to be watching it for updates like a hawk.

Hope it doesn't get abandoned like so many other ambitious indie projects!

I've been following Black Sky for quite some time. Something else you guys might be interested in that got some indirect coverage on the frontpage is Transcendence, which was frontpage of the latest RGCD.

It's more of a Roguelike than an SC2-like, but I think you can find some fun in it.

I've been playing Escape Velocity: Nova for far too long.

It looks like I finally have potential diversions from it!

And if where talking about space games in development, lets not forget about Infinity. It's extremely awesome, with only one programmer and a whole community of artists.  Wink

I grew up with Escape Velocity and Solar Winds, but Star Control II is still my favorite Kiss

Transcendence was on TIGS a while back ( http://tigsource.com/articles/2007/08/15/transcendence-v0-98b ) ... it's good!  A bit unfinished still, though.

I tried it a while ago, but dropped it when I was too lazy to figure out the controls. >_>

I downloaded it again in anticipation of the upcoming game night, where I will utterly fail at Super Melee.

I will probably drive a Spathi Eluder so everyone will know my cowardice.
