I want to create a new loot in my game that temporarily increases your rate of attack and I'm having a tough time thinking of a visual symbol to represent this.  I need it to represent "attack speed increased" but not be confused with "movement speed increased" or "attack damage increased".  What symbols could I use for this that won't be confused?

Thanks

EDIT: My game is sci-fi with guns, not swords.

Separate attack and speed, do similar for the other speed increases.

Distinct symbols for attack, movement, speed, damage and increase should help the player discern between all combinations.

More concrete answer: A symbol for attack, maybe fist or a weapon, a plus and a clock speeding up.

First thought: a sword going fast (i.e. blurred from the speed). Assuming your normal attack symbol is a sword, that is.

rate of fire is generally a separate concept from attack and speed. seconding sik's suggestion, the first thing that came to mind for me was a diagonal sword with a swishy animation smear trailing it

From a visual standpoint, what have your other symbols looked like? Are you using a minimalist approach, or do these symbols use a noticeable level of detail? My thought would be a sort of quick draw symbol to indicate a quick increase in rate of attack or "attack speed increased". Here is a quick rough visual of what I was thinking. Not perfect, but I think you'll get what where I'm coming from.

If a gun "swoop" doesn't really do the tick, I would recommend you just use a different color like orange or red. Was playing Chain of Heros, and the gun icons don't really have much variation, so a simple color change to the gun icon could work fine. Just another thought.

a revolver reloading and the barrel is spinning like nuts

a gun with two arrows attached to it

two guns

a gun with sonic the hedgehog legs

the words "gotta load fast"

a gun shooting a racecar

a racecar shooting a gun

turbo the snail: this time it's edgier, and he's in his own game fighting devil doom

a gun with the word "FAST" over it

a gun that's doing a line of cocaine

a gun, and it's super blurry, implying fastness

a gun that shoots a track meet

a really quick trigger finger

a gun being shot like a bunch of times

a gun that's peeing a lot

attacks peed increased

a gun throwing itself

a tilt-a-whirl...made of guns

like some kind of crazy plus sign that's also an arrow and it's made of guns

an especially fast cowboy

The first time you see a symbol, it won't make sense. An arrow pointing up, a clock, and a weapon-(probablysword) can be recognized by players coming from numerous games. Color coding is a bit different everywhere. If you do have a movement speed powerup a foot's more common than a clock. In games where they're one in the same it's usually just a clock + arrow.

To be fair that's just the gun equivalent to my speeding sword suggestion.

In the spirit of keeping it simple, I like this one the best.

The double-arrow fast forward symbol, i.e.:

is pretty simple and seems fairly universal, so most people should recognise it and have some idea what it represents.  I would use something like that, overlayed with whatever your normal attack symbol is.
