From the manual: * If shells are left in Yoshi's mouth for a long time, Yoshi will swallow them after awhile. If this happens, Yoshi can no longer do the amazing things he can when he holds them in his mouth.
* If an enemy hits Yoshi when Mario is on Yoshi's back, you won't lose Mario or any strength; however, Yoshi will run away. If this happens, you'd better chase him will all your might, because if Yoshi falls off a cliff or into a hole, he'll be gone for sure.
Also Super Mario World treats Yoshi both as a name and the descriptor for the breed: By the way, Yoshi was first discovered on Yoshi's Island, that's how he got his name. And Somewhere in the land of dragons, there are three different-colored Yoshis hiding. At first, they are little kids. So, you must feed them something so they grow. If you feed them five enemies, they'll grow into a big Yoshi. This is if you take the manuals as canonical, which is a dicey proposition.

Well Toad of the Toads makes more sense because presumably Toad is some sort of humanoid fungus ergo he reproduces asexually ergo all Toads are copies of some other original Toad. Perhaps Yoshi is also reproduces asexually as I believe some species of vertebrates are even documented to do so on occasion and so thus the gender question is a moot point and we just revert to "he" when referring to yoshi instead of "it" because "it" refers to something lacking character where Yoshis are indeed strongly personified.
Yeah some reptiles reproduce asexually (actually, it's called parthenogenesis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parthenogenesis)

How do you know? Geno isn't truly a wooden doll, maybe Geno was one of the Lumas.

http://www.mariowiki.com/Yoshi_%28species%29 has some info on Yoshi. Yoshi, as a species, appears to be able to reproduce asexually. Yoshi, the character, may possibly be a male according to that link.

Is that a Goomba? Yep. And the turtles are Koopas. ...You didn't get it. I was talking about the movie's Goomba. So the million dollar question is this:
What is behind a shyguy's mask?
Hum....shy guy's face?

His mask looked kind of like a gas mask in Mario 2. Maybe he's some sort of radioactively altered goomba.
Speaking of Mario 2... just what the hell happened there? (American version I mean)

I wonder if the Doki Doki Panic heroes are now technically apart of Mario continuity? They could be more characters for Mario Kart/tennis/party/etc.

It isn't? We are talking about the one where you pull up white beets from the ground and throw them at enemies, right? If so, I agree, it is one of the better Mario games... I remember renting a SNES cart with all of the older Mario games on it and that was one of them. Best Mario game next to Mario 3
