Thanks so much for the nice comments! Also, if anyone happens to be in New York City this Friday, I'm showing another game I'm working on (with Sparky!), Realistic Kissing Simulator, at the Different Games Arcade there! http://www.differentgames.org/realistic-kissing-simulator/ (sorry to go off topic in my devlog, I'm just pretty excited about it!)

Experimenting with some tree bondage ... (with hopes to make the difficulty curve more gentle: By binding the tree to 'closed branch' mode for a level or two, I'm giving the players a simpler control space to navigate, and hoping that helps them find useful strategies more easily.) You know you have to have spiders in the game now. You know that, right? Personally, I'd prefer a "tutorial" level without any constraints on movement with some specific objectives to drive learning how to control The Tree. Eventually introducing tree bondage in later levels would, I think, present an excellent new thing to adapt to.

This is so exciting to the wood It is sexy! Alright, sorry for the bad pun and joke, but I still think it is amusing (the tree bondage, not my jokes)

Messing with a level select screen; trying to evoke tree rings, and the idea of traveling through the history (or possible histories) of the tree. Also have been messing around with preliminary sound effects, but I can't put those in a .gif ... maybe I'll have to graduate to making actual videos some time, heh.

You could make the tree stump cracked like this: ... and then have the level progression follow and branch like those cracks?

I love this game already. The tree rings work great, however the branch parts should perhaps curve within the ring they are within. Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post. You could make the tree stump cracked like this: image Gah that is a way better suggestion than mine...

Yesterday I was trying to figure out how to do a game logo, but I'm pretty out of my element when it comes to graphic design! All I have so far is this attempt to make the word tree out of tree parts from the game ... Not sure if that's a good direction to go or not ... Also put together a short video yesterday, to submit to something that required a trailer: (Mostly just stuff that I already posted as gifs; a couple new things though.) (Before the past couple days, I've mostly been doing bug fixes and level design stuff recently) Have you seen The Fountain?
Haha, I have! Hadn't thought about it; I guess that is one way to be a tree ...

I think the trailer would be cool if you opened with that scene at the end (best tree, monument, etc.) and have scenes of the non-tree stuff in between to juxapose the Eye's comments So like "Perfect in Symmetry" > cut to tree closing, opening, wriggling around, etc. > "Unchanging in pose" > tree doing acrobatics, etc. > "Unperturbed" > tanks, lasers, chompers, etc.

Ah yeah, that sounds like a much better structure! I'll try it out ... thank you! Edit: Just got an email -- looks like I'll be showing How to Be a Tree at The MIX in LA! http://www.mediaindieexchange.com/

I'm a fan of this direction! Obviously could use polishing, maybe the final version could have the eye floating around and judging it, too.

Hey I'd love to design you a logo. Honestly I mean you could make one yourself, and it'll probably end up just alright, but a game this cool needs a good logo. Shoot me an email [email protected] and I'll send you my portfolio.

I think that works and is quite fitting, but it needs more segments. The ninety degree angles kinda ruin it now. Also subtle animation would be nice; branches swaying in the wind and such.
