Greetings, everyone;

I've been following Tigsource and indie gaming for a while, (and lurking a little bit) but I never really got active in the forums. I thought I'd change that by asking everyone what their favorite gaming soundtracks were. What are you guys into?

I wanted to start off with some of my favorites, too, but I didn't feel like gathering all of the links all at once. (I tried to do this at one point, but I lost all of what I typed and all of my motivation). I've since been tweeting them out as VGSoundtracks.

(Favorites worth reiterating include Hideki Naganuma's work on Sonic Rush and the Jet Set Radio titles along, Hideki Sakamoto's work in Echochrome, and the Madworld soundtrack).

(Oh. I write music, too, and am up for writing for games)

Grim Fandango
Outcast

Red Dead Redemption
Starcraft
Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Super Mario Bros 3
World of Goo
Little Big Planet
Super Meat Boy
Bastion
Shadow of the Colossus

Ico
Vampire - The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Beyond Good & Evil
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Prince of Persia, Sands of Time
Gothic

I find it interesting this is also for the most part a list of my absolute favourite games... this can't be a coincidence. The music made them sing.

Welcome aboard! It's always great to see another composer around here!
(p.s. if you haven't already, it might be worthwhile to post a little hello in the introduction thread!)

Anyway, here's my list. It's roughly 50% personal Top 10, 50% guided tour through the wide world of VGM. Let's go!

— Beautiful piano-based electronica, and one of my greatest musical influences. (see also:

, Hellsinker.)

Gradius 2 — One of the best shmup soundtracks of all time. (see also: XEXEX, Violent Storm)
Cho Ren Sha 68K — FM synth goodness. Plus the soundtrack is a 5-CD mammoth. ( n o t h i n g c o m p a r e s )
Viewpoint — Awful game, great soundtrack. Funny how that works out. (see also: Battle Garegga)
Gimmick! — This game pushes every chip in the NES to its limit, and the soundtrack is no exception. (see also: Journey to Silius musically, Recca technically)
Streets of Rage — YUZO KOSHIRO. (see also: Bosconian X68000)
Golden Sun — MOTOI SAKURABA. (see also: Gikyokuonsou)
Dynamite Headdy — Surprisingly diverse and creative in each and every track. (see also: Earthbound, Clean Asia, Katamari Damacy)
Sonic CD (J) — FUNKY FRESH. (see also: Sega Rally Championship, Metal Slug, Viewpoint)
Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu — Seriously. Seriously! (see also: McKids, Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf)

Actraiser (Very SNES RPGish, but with some interestingly varied style)
The Binding Of Isaac (DannyB's best yet I think)
Ecco The Dolphin (A huge range and variety in this one)
Double Dragon [NES] (Freely admit this one is pure nostalgia)
Illusion of Gaia (Weird, haunting, South American influences)
Mystical Ninja [N64] (Interesting mix of classical Japanese and modern)
Katamari Damacy (Insane and wonderful)
No More Heroes (Excellent, and a nice John Williams-ish 'tons of different riffs on the same tune' thing)

I'm going to go ahead and post all the un-"cool" choices that everyone probably already knows, because this thread needs those. Also, they are genuinely my favorites.

note: i should give credit to cly5m for introducing me to some of these things and getting me interested in chip music in general.

- never played this game, but who even cares

- very creepy game with a really brilliant soundtrack by an anonymous composer.
Metroid - my personal favorite. One of the most brilliant yet uses of a chip... its minimalism is perfect. It uses the limitations of the medium to its advantage, and that makes it great.
The Legend of Zelda - lacks the subtleties of the Metroid soundtrack but has great tunes nonetheless.
Super Metroid - the best music that ever happened for the SNES. Atmospheric as anything ever.
Donkey Kong Country games - not atmospherically on the same level as Super Metroid, but in terms of composition i think they are some of the best tunes to ever be in a game.
The N64 Legend of Zelda games - no explanation needed
Planescape: Torment - a great atmospheric soundtrack. Fallout is also really good, and done by the same person.
Morrowind - i'm not fond of orchestral scores in general but i think that Jeremy Soule usually does a praiseworthy job. It helps that he tends to score the kinds of games that i'm into.

my favorite independent game scores:
Knytt - i guess i like atmosphere.
Within a Deep Forest - actually probably contains two of my favorite video game tracks ever. That was one. Here's the other.
Clean Asia! - John Marwin kills. The music in Cactus' games is pretty much always well-chosen though.
Garden of Coloured Lights - mainly the second level, which starts at about 5:20.
An Untitled Story - the only good MIDI soundtrack there ever was. It's weird and undisciplined and meandering but that's precisely why it works, in my opinion.

Random loose ends... Cave Story is pretty good but everyone knows that. Kirby games tend to have really overbearing, excessively cheerful music that i can't help admiring. Soldexus is a really good Castlevania clone whose music i love but can't find anywhere. The Cleaner is a really good platform action game whose music i love but can't find anywhere. Space Funeral and Seiklus have fantastic music but none of it is original.

Persona 3's poppy, upbeat soundtrack was a nice breath of fresh air from the standard RPG fare.

Burn My Dread (Intro/Final Battle):

Aria of the Soul (Theme to the Velvet Room):

Changing Seasons (Walking Around Theme): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHieCyez_A0

Final Fantasy X has some of my favorite songs of all time.

To Zanarkand (Theme Song, makes me feel manly tears) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLnZ5jcsRpc

Hymn of The Fayth (Song of the Aeons): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9vWvXoZhgI

Final Fantasy VII is good.

JENOVA (Boss Theme): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6GrZYE2il0

Halo gets me really fucking pumped.

The Last Remnant - great battle music, or perhaps the best battle music?

SMT: Digital Devil Saga - The composer really went all out on this one. Shoji Meguro in the house!

NiER - Perhaps one of the best video game soundtracks ever made.

F-Zero GX - Mainly because each character has their own theme, and there are around 30 of them - not to mention the track music. Go-Go-GST also has a nice selection of Daiki Kasho's incredible vocal tracks from Gran Turismo.

I liked the Morrowind music when I started playing the game, but got really sick of it because it never changes - I forget, but there might be a combat track and that's it - so if you play a long time... Epileptic

This is a great idea - got loads to listen to now.

For me it's:
OKAMI - beautiful orchestral score fused with traditional japanese elements

Shenmue - same kind of thing as okami

Bust a Groove - irresistible 90s cheesy pop songs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4Xqj7pEfQw
Phantasy Star Online - sci-fi pads with jazz extended chords, beautiful ballads, just... everything - i had too many to choose from for this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te-3V8HjJoI
+1 on Jet Set Radio
All of the Katamari games really - insane, eclectic - here's some synth pop wonderfulness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_QydNXI_ok
+1 marios/final fantasies/zeldas
Parappa The Rapper series - masaya matsuura writes some real fucking funky music http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iykmurb9-YM
Vib Ribbon - lovely j-pop from laugh & peace http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpcyg4WE6mQ
mmm... Gitaroo Man

That's it for now Smiley For me I guess it's all about the music from rpgs & music games.

This is awesome. It's going to take me forever to get through all of this music.

(and now that I remember it, I need to add the Hero Core soundtrack to the VGSoundtracks twitter feed)
