It's not so much that it was offensive, it's just that I didn't recognize either of those types among the independent developers I know, so it felt like it was talking about something that didn't exist.

I was thinking about posting a reply to someone else here about value, money and professionalism, but I soon realized that exactly what rinkuhero posted is true for me too. I don't recognize either of those types either when looking around. In fact, most amateurs and/or indies I know of have had (proper) websites way before they even had their first few finished games.

Technically hating something and being that same thing aren't mutually exclusive ...

Definitely true, but very often people hate the most what they've turned into themselves. I still remember all those fierce anti-gay speeches of that TV evangelist guy Haggard and later his confessions of having had sex with a male prostitute who also was his meth dealer. Since the guy from the article has a IT Manager background if I've understood correctly, it doesn't seem too odd to think that he either failed at what he once wanted to be ....or he just simply doesn't know what he's talking about.  Undecided

On the subject of internet handles, I've been meaning to ask: what's with yours?

ah. Mine's just my first name.

We should totally have a thread about this. I'd love to know the significance behind some of the stranger ones on the forum.

I'm fairly certain half that article was written using some kind of random-article generator...

yeh know, judging from the game he's developing, I'd say he's an "amateur" as well.

Yes, I don't think he's hiding or denying that he considers himself an amateur.

I just don't see why he has to foist his own failings on other perfectly good developers though Smiley

Fail, http://unangband.blogspot.com/ isn't hosted on Geocities.  Sad

But I guess blogspot comes close because it's free.

I escape! But seriously, all this labeling is getting really amateurish.  Huh?

"A classic indication of an amateur game is using a game maker tool of some kind, such as Neverwinter Nights, Adventure Construction Set or RPG Maker."

...and game maker or blitz3d? so i think they both are "amateur" thingies...i've never saw those two aspect of being indie, also if i dinstinct freeware projects from indie software houses such introversion or moonpod

"Expect amateur developers to promise the world and deliver a 80x24 console screen for the first few years of development. Then you'll realise they've delivered a world and hidden it behind the amber glow of the self-same console screen."

he's talking about Dwarf Fortress isn't he?

He's developing a roguelike himself. The comment could refer to any or all roguelike games.
