Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. Admittedly VERY low budget, but VERY VERY scary.

From the episode called "Blink".

IMO the best episode in the new show.

Some of the maplestory monsters are really cool.

But sometimes real life monsters are the scariest!

Low budget? It'd must've cost a small fortune to sculpt all those differently-posed statues (and additional ones when they moved).

I agree, though, one of scariest creatures I could've imagined.

Actually, I just watched this today, so it's relevant. Klaus Kinski as Nosferatu in the Herzog version is fucking terrifying:

Twisted and ancient, filled with self-loathing and regret but still every bit a predator.

Come now, you have to admit that having a monster that only existed when you weren't looking is a pretty good way to avoid having to do any CGI or special effects.

R U serious? Just from the picture it is rather obvious that it is a painted actor with some crap photoshopping on the eyes and probably carton for the wings and dress.
They must have used some actors with poser models thrown in the mix. Maybe there have been real statues at a moment in the episode, but they could have used preexisting statues.
Doctor Who is not known for its sophisticated special effects.

Doctor Who has a pretty reasonably budget these days, I think. I haven't seen the whole thing, but they seem to have quite a bit of CG in some episodes, at least.

I suppose having immobile creatures is obviously cheaper than, say, Industrial Light & Magic calibur effects, but given the primitive CGI of most television shows, it's far from a stretch. Plus, let's not forget the other staple Dr. Who creatures - Daleks and Cybermen, most prominently - are so low-budget it's comical. I think the only ones that needed significant CGI work were the Saturnynians.

But yeah, I see your basic point.

Okay, that's a pretty bad model, but the last few seasons have really stepped up on the effects side (again with the Saturnynians).

I know it's sort of a given but I still gotta say it.

Silent Hill 2 did such a fantastic job of being unnerving.  I still have fond memories of being scared shitless playing it alone in the dark.  First getting the flashlight and the leg-mannequin-thing "activating".

The courtyard with the gallows, where you get the horseshoe.  Technically it's not really a monster but the sounds of horses galloping around while you're "in" there was fuckin' spooky.  Knowing that the whole prison is underground but still appearing to be outside didn't help matters.

Angela's weird fuckin' dad-monster.  That whole scene was so damn uncomfortable.

Silent Hill 2 will always have a place in my heart for being my first survival horror game.

(The lets play where I found the badass screenshots is pretty damn funny, by the way.)

I just watched that Doctor Who episode. It was brilliant, but I am now going to be terrified of statues forever. Me and my overactive imagination...

It's easily the best first episode for anyone you want to introduce Doctor Who to. That, or the Empty Child.
