I've been intending to watch Paprika for a while now. It looks pretty bizarre, and thus pretty interesting to me.
I also hear that Princess Mononoke is pretty good.

that deer thing from princess mononoke creeped me out.
so many things from anime are creepy. like... they're creepy in the same way.
like smiling fetuses. or a fat man bloodily exploding. or sweat on a mustached man's face.
they're somehow all alike in their creepiness despite different contexts. hermmmm...

Everyone needs to watch the short movie series Memories comprised of "Magnetic Rose", "Stink Bomb", and "Cannon Fodder". I had the luxury of seeing them on Youtube a couple years back but was sad to see them gone now. They're definitely worth a watch though. |

I didn't do this recently, but I read through The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. It's about a bunch of college slackers who have no hope of getting a job in the 'real' world, and so must resort to their supernatural talents to make a living... on the dead. By completing the last wishes of the deceased, they can take what the dead left behind (money, etc). Of course, jobs are few and far between, and often don't pay at all, so they have to supplement their income with a variety of side jobs (delivery, manual labor, etc). It's got a whole lot of the macabre, and a ton of dark humor (emphasis on the dark... this isn't a story for kids). But it's a fun read.  I enjoyed it. |

"Well, hmm this is fairly tame stuff, let me just turn the page here WHOA GOD NAKED DEAD BODIESLASJDFLJAFK" (It puts the graphic in graphic novel, but the nudity is equal opportunity, in case you folks were wondering) What I like about the series is that the main characters aren't particularly heroic, just people (fuckups and slackers, to be more precise) trying to make a living and survive (and have a laugh or two while doing it). It's a nice change of pace. |
