I've improved the game controls a bit more and more happy with them now. The unit icons are now all the way to the right and the end turn icon is above them. It feels more visually balanced now. I've also been fixing UI bugs with colours being wrong with highlighting for dead units, making sure free fire mode works correctly and areas are highlighted again when switching back to move mode. Basically, all these little things which need doing.

You can do p2p networking
Do any games still really do this? It seems so problematic between NAT, routers, port forwarding, firewalls, and then the need to exchange IP addresses, unless you have some server side lobby type system.

I looked at Raknet, but don't I have to actually have a host server to do server->client networking?
One person running the game would be the 'server' and the opponent the 'client'. You don't need a separate server. You could also use NAT punchthru to avoid having to set up portforwarding on the connecting machines. All you would need is the IP of your friend to connect.

Back to work on this.. I've been tweaking colours and the GUI. I've compacted the GUI vertically a little bit, and I've lightened the floor tiles, made the blacks a bit lighter and the whites a bit darker. Added soft shadows which are more blue and improved some aspects of the GUI with the benefit of a break from looking at things. Tweaked some colours, and also added some 'subtle' shading to parts of some of the tiles. Although I like the flat colour style I also want to hint at a bit more of a modern look with some colour graduations - as long as I don't overdo it! Some GUI bugs to fix I've noticed already - need to do this whilst my motivation lasts!

Thanks!
I've worked on the graphics some more today, and improved the gradient support in the engine. I'm hoping to only use gradients where necessary and subtly, so the improved support in the engine was required for that.

I was wondering what had happened to this project a few days ago - good to see it still lives!

Not much to show or talk about at the moment. I've done more work on the graphics and also have developed a unified palette from all the different images in the game at the moment (tiles, heroes, zog, etc..) To help with this I've written a colour remapping routine so I don't have to manually change things in my editor. This also helps when I add colours and have to move existing ones around. Slow but steady tinkering at the moment, helping develop the style and seeing what I like and what doesn't work.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Real life has got in the way a bit! I'm still tinkering away.. Real life can be such a nuisance... I'll wait patiently for this. Sunk so many hours of my youth into playing Laser Squad with friends (also Lords of Chaos and Chaos before that). EDIT: Oh wow! Straight after writing that I checked out your website and noticed Chaos Groove. Downloading!
