I was told by a certain Ashkin to set up a devlog. So here I am.

I'm currently working on a procedurally generated world. You can follow my Tumblr, but I'll also attempt to update this thread as well.

This was a vague description I posted last week:

Quote
Think Minecraft mixed with Proteus and Zelda, with Tolkien, Miyazaki and Hiroshige in there as well. Think of a world that exists despite of the player and is on the whole indifferent to their existence.

I think the most amazing thing about generated terrain is the unexpected results of a computer blindly following a set of rules. If you look at my first tumblr posts (like this one), you'll see some of my first attempts at generative landscapes. I found it was highly addictive just refreshing the program to see all the random different configurations of  the houses. I'd love to be able to do that on a larger, more complex scale.

I'm now collaborating with three developers who are kindly going to to help me turn this crazy ambitious thing into a reality. I'm really excited to see where this goes.

Here's some concept art to give you a taste of what we'll be aiming for, there's loads more on my blog:

And here are some early tests, although we've decided to go back to square on with the way we're going to be generating the landscape:

Here's a mockup (not implemented) of how I envisage the starry sky to look:

Going to be more explorative than quest-oriented, am I right?

Anything could change at the moment, but I'm leaning towards no quests. I don't want it to be an obnoxious game. The emphasis is on exploration and atmosphere. I guess maybe like Proteus but less surreal. But we'll see. Early days at the moment, early days.

Cheers!

It'll be a PC/Mac game, don't really think it'll be in a browser. It'll probably head towards the 'RPG' side of things, but then again, there's plenty of things I'd like to do differently. To be honest at the moment I'd just like a cool place to wander around in and enjoy the sights.

This looks beautiful! I especially like the structures in the first two pictures. The shading style looks great. I'll be following this Smiley

This looks like Eskils: Love, but done right.

It's very artistic but also extremely readable!, so relaxing to look at!

Nice style! How are you doing the water? Just different shader properties? Will it have any different physical properties?

Looks great, looking forward to playing this.  I know it's early, but are you planning on matching the colours in the concepts?  I really like them.

I saw these mock-ups a while back on your blog and they look amazing, it's good to see you found some chaps to turn this into a game. I really hope you somehow keep the aesthetic from the first two screenies shown though I'm not sure how you can do that in first person mode. Good luck with it all. Hand Thumbs Up LeftSmiley

Really nice start and really like the concept art and the aesthetics you're going for. Will definitely be following your development.

Thanks everyone! I think it's really good to share progress right from the beginning, but at the same time I worry about hyping things up too much. Even though it's taken a ton of time to get to this stage conceptually speaking, we've still barely started – I mean, all we've got is concept art and one little experiment to show.

That said, I really am committed to making this thing a reality.

I'm thinking just a reflective shader right now. It might be kind of cool to experiment with animated pixel hatching say, when the wind is blowing, or when rain hits the water… or maybe when the water is running downhill. But at the moment it's probably best to keep things simple. One of the new guys who's joined us (Peter) has experience with physics simulations, so you never know. Smiley

We'll probably be using voxels for the terrain, but Jimmy (a wiz at geometry) is going to implement some kind of skinning – probably dual marching cubes. So no Minecraft blockyness (although very much inspired by it).
