The best part aout the fallouts is the SILHOUETTE system of talents inspired by the GURPS PnP RPGs. You keep playing just for the next level and to learn new tricks.
Also if by "american isometric RPGs" you mean Baldur's Gate 2 then I feel sorry for you.

I played it recently (on a mac no less) and I don't really see the fuss. I have an issue with stat based games though.

yes, baldur's gate, planescape, icewind dales. all those.
never could stand those. it's a shitty perspective.
and it's not a prejudice, it's a preference.
ut im willing to give it a shot, just for the post-apoc setting, and fallout 3 exitement. and im not excited about the graphics. jesus fuck. who do you think i am? when i say "it looks good", i mean "this game looks like a good game" it dosent even actually look *that* good.
im trying to be open minded here but you people are just pissing me off.
im sorry im in a fucking terrible mood today.
looks like fallout 1 did get a mac release after all.

I loved Fallout 1 and 2 and I'm looking forward to Fallout 3.
Fallout 1 is awesome because:
sweet retro-future 50's-gone-postapocalyptic style. the game has massive style points, if you're into dystopias.
town-based goal/quest type thing where you can totally be the hero in one town, totally mess up another, but just say "screw this" and move on to the next city, or whatever
success through nerditude - you can beat major plot points / quests by specializing in repairs and science and fixing crap
finding a dog named Dogmeat and getting him to follow you through the whole game
getting really friggin' upset when Dogmeat finally dies (not scripted, but it's bound to happen in combat eventually)
wacky fun and gloomy/bleak plot
being able to talk your way through the entire game, if you have a thing for conversation trees and max out the right stats
big friggin' laser beam guns
Fallout 2 is also cool for most of the above reasons, plus it turns Unarmed Combat from a boring skill to being a wickedly awesome martials arts / boxing ninja master who can punch a huge mutant cyborg in the face and win. Also, it makes fun of Scientology.

What I loved abot fallout 1 is that it was so open ended, that you could reach one of the endings in 30 minutes with a bit of luck. This happened to me in the first playthrough and I was like woah. Big surprise.

They won't run on my mac.
Get an emulator. I tried the native mac version. I've a feeling I've tried it w/ wine as well, but I guess I can give it another go :/

So, why the Van Buren pic?
That's what Fallout 3 could have been. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a F3 hater. It's just that it's... not Fallout. And I wanted more Fallout.

i downloaded fallout 1 and 2 overnight, in native mac versions at that. F1 works just fine, havent tried 2 yet.
imediatly i can tell you that the hex system used to move your guy around kinda sucks. why cant i just arbitrarily click anywhere in like, oh say, all these other top down isometric games.

I didn't really like F2. It's kinda cheesy. And yeah, I'm not terribly fond of the hex board either.

Yeah I didn't like F2 either. Too long, too cheesy, it lost a bit of the science fiction aspect when it went for the cheesy "humour".

Shrouded Hills was poorly designed. At least in the sense that you really need a somewhat well built character to get out of there. Testing characters (for newcomers) will have a hard time trying to cross the bridge, given the strenght of the bandits, and that you need a rather high int to outwit them.
AT first I didn't like FO2, because Klamath seriously looked like a poorly made mod. It was until way later that I couldn't stop playing it.

im not liking it very much so far. the interface is HORRIBLE. it looks good, its all pretty and fits the theme, but the actual USER INTERFACE part of it is horrible.
so i just spent something like 45 minutes killing rats in a cave. im told i need to go to vault 15 to get a water chip thingie. so i go there. i find this old shack, and inside a ladder that leads me to another cave with rats. and a broken open vault door. inside, just a few rooms with more rats, and an elevator shaft that goes down. oh, but i need a rope to go down! i walk around, looking for a rope. no rope. after about 10 minutes of dicking around i realize there's a little locker here that i can open. surely it contains rope. nope! stimpacks. i look around for another one of those lockers, and find one. surely it contains rope. but no, i get flares instead. then i realize there's absolutely nothing here for me. no rope, no nothing. do i need to travel back to vault 13 or something? wtf is this shit.

Why didn't you stop at the town on the way to vault 15? Shady Sands or something else retirement home-ish.
