I have paid more I guess - bought the expansion on Impulse soon as it came out but already owned a boxed original. So I've bought it twice at full price hehe. But one the plus side, they sent me two copies of the original, so I gave one to a friend.

I don't think I have heard of any of these games, but supreme commander sounds like it is a file manager Is it a really awesome file manager? Is it ... file managetainment?

So Impulse is like Steam only for some other company? How intrusive is it? And which of these games are worth getting? I know I'm supposed to play Space Rangers 2, are the others any good?

Hah hah! :D No... But really, it's an awesome game, from what I hear. It's civ-like with online capabilities. You start out as a tiny base and build up until you have a whole army of world-conquering tanks, planes, and submarines. The design looks great, and the game play looks really fun.

Apparently (although I have no experience with the thingy), you can run games without Impulse on, so not very intrusive.

I've bought Unreal Gold from Impulse just to test it (was only $9.9x) . Unlike Steam (from which i've bought everything else basically :-P), it doesn't run in the background and in fact you get the original unmodified .EXE files (Steam wraps EXE files to their DRM system which opens Steam when you run them).
Some things i liked: - More sleek UI - Simple shop pages - There is a First Person Shooters category (Steam puts FPS in the more generic Action category) - Has some stuff you can't find in other DD systems (such as Chrome SpecForce) - Many serious indie games - Very fast servers - Stardock visits and participates in the forums. Of course this might change if they become Steam-like popular :-P - Embedded IRC client
Some things i disliked: - WAY too slow to load. - Very few games available and even less FPS games (basically it has all Epic games, Painkiller, Alpha Prime and Chrome SpecForce - and i've got all of them from Steam). - Same prices as Steam - Tools. I dislike the lack of focus.
So since Steam has almost everything Impulse has, the prices are the same and the clients aren't very different, the only reason to buy something for Impulse is that it isn't available elsewhere or for some reason you don't want to use Steam's wrapper (the wrapper makes regular patches not work with Steam and you have to wait for "Steamified" patches).

I've always been meaning to try out Space Rangers, so perhaps this is a great excuse to do so.
