Thanks a lot. I did an edit to him after some Redditors correctly pointed out that he should be taller. I think he actually looks more like the character now.

Looks good Smiley Shading seems a little inconsistent though..

Hot damn, thats amazing! I saw you index painting a few weeks ago but this is convincing me even more about trying it out.

Here's some flowing water.

Not picture: water splashes on the rocks. Those are only 4 frames and asynced with this.

Is it just me or does it jump instead of loop properly? Ignoring that jump moment, the frame-to-frame motion looks prettay good!

It depends where you look.  Most of it looks good to me, but the upper right is jumping

I've got a feeling Dan used his HD-index painting, maybe with some animated noise or something.

Last week's Pixel Dailies competition was very successful. We had around 25 entries, and the best pixel art award went to Joshua Skelton for his awesome mimic:

Today I'm running another pixel art comp, here's the link. Hope to see some of you there.

Yeah, but I think HD-index painting should work well with animated gradients similar to color cycling.

BTW Kudos for making such a successful competition! It's always great when so many people take part in it.

I'll go ahead and say 'nah'

It's scrolling some texture under a mask and some kind of overlay layer, I heard.

Though I can't fathom how.

I'm dying to see an un-indexed version of this so I can start trying to comprehend

This would be such a fantastic base to animate on top of, by the way. To get rid of all those parts that feel mechanical and scroll:y

Yeah, top right corner still needs some more work. Thanks for the feedback! Smiley

Yeah it can totally use a manual pixel-pass for sure.  But I was pretty impressed for how far it went without it.  You can only really get away with it with stuff like organic FX though.

well wow, I'm impressed as fuck. <3 this is just lovely.

You don't even need to animate over it, honestly. It's enough to just have some particles that fly their own way instead of scrolling with the texture and that'd break up the motion a lot

That's an amazing technique, Dan! The positerize + color gradiant with the diffusion pattern overlay is great! I'm much more familiar at "HD" painting, but love the look of patterned dithering. Your article makes working with both so much easier! I'd been using batch files previous. Hardly realtime feedback.

In your x3 gif above, mind sharing how you got from the 1st to the 2nd? With the color mask? Or is it a color gradiant map with a steep change from red to grey over some threshold?

Whoohoo, finally more colors than a NES! I hope a mockup will follow!
edit: ok, I saw the mockup one page later.  Gentleman  But ok, what about a 2nd one?  Wink

Two separate ramps/animations, with the fire set to "lighter color" blend mode.  It ensures the smoke emerges from the flames in a believable way as opposed to trying to do it with a single ramp.
